Have any of you guys got a Kindle or other e-book reader? The only reason I would get one would be so I could get books like this for free and could take a whole bundle of them away wherever I may be going. Does anyone have any recommendations for model of device (maybe even an iPad!) or where's the best place to get e-books from? cheers!

Most of us are from the United States and are too poor these days to buy cool stuff.

I work in a library so I get a chance to try all kinds of media format before we purchase them...I'm not a fan of e-readers. It would be fine if I read a lot of fiction but I read non-fiction so I tend to flip back and forth from the index to the section I'm reading. If you have the option avoid the e-reader and get the iPad.

Two cents.

The Kindle is a very good device. I have one, and I thoroughly enjoy having it. Doesn't have tons of functions like the iPad, but it reads very well. It feels as if you are reading paper, and more light is actually better.

I use it for those purposes, to put old Christian works on it. I don't regret it a bit :) So in essence, when I have my Kindle with me, I also have my library. So yes, Kindle would be my recommendation.

I have to agree on the Kindle - never planned on getting one but my wife got me one for my birthday last September. I was very surprised at how good of a reading device it actually is.

Thanks for the recommendations guys! I don't honestly see myself ever shelling out for an iPad so the non-3G Kindle is probably the most likely option. As is so often the case though it's more expensive to buy it from the UK Amazon site as it is from the US one (equivalent of $40 more expensive)!

Whereabouts have you been getting these? I know that CCEL have books available as PDFs, would these look OK on the Kindle?

I have a Kindle. My wife uses it on trips. I use the kindle ap for my iTouch since it is smaller. Makes it nice to read when I have a few spare minutes. Also, I got a cheap kindle version of the NASV, and having that on my iTouch is nice for hospital visits.

Hey have any of you guys tried Zotero for organizing your personal library?

Zotero

I've heard interesting things, someone over at the Reformation 21 blog wrote about using it to collate all their material in various media (books, blog posts, articles, mp3's, etc...) topically for ease of research.

There's different ways to do it. You could buy very cheap works off of Amazon, you could take text PDFs where the computer can detect the text and process it so that it is put in e-Book format; and even some of the PDFs that are essentially just visual scans (no text selection available) read quite decently. Not all PDFs work, but if you find the right one, it'll work great.

Other times, I've just taken text off of a website like gracegems.org, assembled the document in Word, and processed it through a program to put in e-Book format. I did that with a couple different books, and it works perfectly with the Kindle. Should you get one, I will teach you how to do it.

I think that with the CCEL PDFs, running them through the software I use to convert them, would look excellent.

The Kindle isn't as advanced as other features out there; if you are only interested in reading, then the Kindle is quite good I think; very easy on the eyes, my friends keep commenting that it looks like paper (one didn't realize it was a screen). If you want more advanced functions, another device would be better, but this does the job, letting you read comfortably.

Try Google Books and Grace-eBooks.com

You, sir, are my new best friend for unveiling this magnificent source to me :)

Send them an email, it's on the front of their site. I didn't see any info about copyright on Ages but they could be on the CD-ROMS.

CCEL Web site

Most of the books at the Christian Classics Ethereal library are in the public domain. A few are public domain in the United States but not in Europe; you should check local copyright status before copying outside of the United States. A few are still under a publisher's copyright and are used by permission; these are noted on the book information page.
You may use the text version of any public domain book at the CCEL in any way you please, including republishing it. However, the XML and other versions derived from the XML (all non-text versions) are copyrighted. They may be used for non-profit personal, educational, and church purposes involving fewer than 25 copies of a book without further permission. However, you must contact us for permission to republish CCEL works or to use them commercially.
It is a violation of copyright to post any of the CCEL non-text versions of books on any type of Web site without a license agreement with CCEL.

I looked on their page, and they state that what they have obtained, they have obtained it with permission. Puts me at ease :)

My wife has been asking me to buy an e-reader for months now but I just don't feel like I can do it. Her compliant...my books are always overflowing on my bookshelf and all over the house. I keep a bookshelf in my room, books on the floor by my bed, audio books stack by my CD/mp3 player, on the floor by my computer, on the coffee table...etc. I have boxes of books in the basement as well.

My wife may force me to get one eventually.
