I don't read very fast, in fact I read at about the pace of a crippled turtle, but I do try to read when ever I have spare time. These days I'm reading a number of things. My latest read was John Nevin's 1840's book, A Mystical Presence: A Vindication of the Reformed or Calvinistic Doctrine of the Holy Eucharist. I found this to be a very telling and exciting book. I found Charles Hodges review on the book and I've printed it out and hope to read it soon.

I'm meandering my way through a new biography about Mormon founder Joseph Smith. The books is Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rollingby historian Richard Bushman. Bushman is a well respected historian and a Mormon.

I'v also started reading the writings of Pope Gregory the Great. These writings are in the Second Series of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers volume XII. I've read the editor's Prolegomena and I'm now reading Gregory's The Book of Pastoral Rule. When I finish this I plan to continue reading Pope Gregory's letters.

Coram Deo,
Kenith

That sounds very interesting. If you decide to read it, please keep us posted!

I did pick it up - am only about 100 pages into a >500 page book - he's currently studying in the United States in the late 20's. The author goes into some detail about how Bonhoeffer's beliefs were formed and how they influenced his later life. So far, so good - am really enjoying it.

Sounds interesting. I've always been curious about how strong Boenhoffer's relationship with liberal Christianity and the social gospel was.

Sounds interesting. I've always been curious about how strong Boenhoffer's relationship with liberal Christianity and the social gospel was.

He was very disappointed when he came to Union Theological Seminary in the US because of how liberal the theology was. According to his biographer he worshiped and taught at a Baptist church in Harlem (Adam Clayton Powell Sr. was the pastor) because that's where he heard sound Biblical teaching. He did develop some of his social views while in the US - he was shocked by the overt racism of the US (particularly when he traveled to the south), at that point he hadn't seen that in his country (although he soon would with the rise of the Nazi party).

More to follow. . .

Interesting. I always thought that Powell was a proponent of something like the social gospel or liberation theology. I was also under the impression that the church (Abyssinian Baptist) was also more a center of social action than biblical preaching. Thanks for the update! I didn't realize that Boenhoeffer was disappointed by Union Theological Seminary.

I recently finished reading the works of St Cyprian in the Ante-Nicene Fathers and I am now reading Cyprian the Bishop by J. Patout Burns.

I've also started reading Charles Darwin's Origin of Species.

I plan to start reading the works of St. Hippolytus very soon. His work is also in the Ante-Nicene Fathers.

Later,
Kenith

Right now I'm reading The Doctrines of Grace: Rediscovering the Evangelical Gospel by James Montgomery Boice and Phil Ryken. It's written in a popular style and is a very good introductory work for someone new to Reformed soteriology.

Just started Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology today.
Next on the list are:
John Ensor's The Great Work of the Gospel
Sam Storm's Chosen for Life
and John Piper's Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die

All for some courses I am hoping to take in the Fall.
