If I were to sing in Les Mis, I'd take the part of the grown up Cosette--fits my voice better than any other role.

I did lots of theater as a kid, roles like:

Mammy Yokum in L'il Abner
Fairy Godmother in Cinderella
Mother Superior in Sound of Music
Grandmother Tzeitel in Fiddler on the Roof
chorus parts in Sound of Music, Annie and West Side Story

then some opera when I got older:
Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) by Mozart
1st boy in Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute) by Mozart
Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) by Rossini
and Musetta in La Boheme by Puccini

In the last 4 years that I have been involved with my local community theater, I've been in....

"Anything Goes" (musical)- played one of Reno's "Angels"
"Social Security" (play) - Trudy
"The Marriage Fool" (play)- Susan

I've also worked tech for quite a few, including "Jekyll & Hyde" where I was stage manager. :D

isnt there a massive difference from Musical singing to Opera Singing??
Well, to answer your question, it depends. There are some differences. Opera singers are trained to be able to sing without artificial amplification (no mikes). And opera singers don't belt. (I lost my ability to do that when I was 17--my voice changed). But the basics of singing are still the same. Ability to interpret music dramatically and to produce a beautiful sound, are paramount in both styles.
