John 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.

On the surface this would seem that Jesus is making a distinction between Himself and God. Yet I believe that tha
t He himself is God Almighty, the Son of God, God incarnate. Any thoughts as to how “also” can be an equivalence?

The subsequent utterances make the context a bit clearer. I think Jesus was telling them to believe that He would return again. So believe in God (as had always been the command), but now believe in me (not just for salvation, but also that I will return for you all)

If I’m not mistaken Jesus had only revealed Himself as the Son of God at that time. So He is most likely referring to The Father when He says God.

Athanasian Creed touches on it, in regards to Jesus' humanity.
Yes I understand that and I have absolutely no problem with the orthodox christology; however the scripture seems to make a distinction between Jesus and God.

The Jews believed in God. Now He wants them to believe in the son of God the Savior of the world, who they had never heard of, plus the Holy Spirit. God had promised to them the HS who was to be working then, a more comprehensive role.

That verse begins the so-called Farewell Discourse (chapters 14-17) in which Jesus is preparing his disciples for his return to the Father and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Paraclete). The whole discourse is worth a read. He begins it with making the equivalence you intimate -You have faith in God; have faith in me. To suggest that they have faith in him as they do God is a statement of equivalence. For a 1st century Judean, to ask another to have faith in them as they do God would immediately indicate the person making the statement is identifying with God. Later he will say, If you've seen me, you've seen the Father- another statement identifying himself with God.

Go back to John 1:1- In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God. That is both a statement of identification and of differentiation.

Christ makes clear distinction between himself and the Father throughout. Such as, "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day." - John 6:44

John 6:40 "And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."

It is a circular situation. God the Father draws and calls us to Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ is our mediator to the Father. We must believe in both. Believe in God the Father and believe also in Jesus Christ, because it is the Father who sent Christ for us and it is Christ who mediates to the Father for us.

It means (to His disciples John, Peter, Thomas,etc..) to not lose heart, tough times are a coming. One, Jesus is soon to be crucified . so they believe in God do not lose heart believe in Me(Jesus) just as you would believe in God. Even though i am fixin to be crucified, even though you disciples do not know what lies ahead do not lose your faith in Me (Jesus)

Isaiah revealed the fullness of God. They just rejected it and many still do today.
Isaiah 9
6 For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

3 persons one God. Jesus is also speaking from His human nature.

Jesus is sublimely (or not so much) revealing His divinity. Say the words out loud and as if it were you.

You believe in God, believe also in me. What man can ask to be believed like God is believed?

The purpose of the Trinity is not to melt the Father, Son and Holy Spirit into one, rather to avail ourselves to the help, guidance and wisdom of each. Its good to think of each of the three as distinct. Jesus is just reminding us of this gently here. Remember what the only unforgivable sin is. Its not about the Father or Son, rather the Holy Spirit. Why this is is hard to say. But it is so we respect it reverentially. As any sensible believer would do. We have all three and we SHOULD be so thankful for it.

Thank you very much, I suppose in my mind it would be easier to understand this verse if He said “you believe in the father, believe also in me“, however the Trinity was not fully revealed to them at that time so I suppose the term father wouldn’t have made much more sense to them.
