Hi everyone! My name is Jess, and I really enjoy 'talking shop' with other writers. I thought I'd post here to 'meet' some of my fellow writers on the forum - so, what do you write?

I'll start: I write magazine articles, mostly for a teen anti-drug publication, because it's good experience and it's nice to be paid to write in any form.

My passion is for writing contemporary Christian fiction novels, and my goal is to be a traditionally published author. Any of you have tried or done this know how difficult it is, especially now that the economy has taken its toll on the publishing industry.

Looking forward to hearing from you! :)

Hi, Jess.

My name is Jeremy, and I write historical fiction or fantasy. I currently writing a historical fictional book. It's on a true story about a civilian riot and its effect on the people involved. Please let me know if you have any ideas or in fact any thing that can help me. Thanks.

Hey Jess :)

I write a mix of stuff. I used to write historical fiction, but I found that with school I just didn't have the time to do enough research to make it convincing. At the moment I'm working on a sort of fantasy book...it was going to be fantasy, but I decided that I didn't want to copy all the things that other fantasy authors have done, so now it's pretty much historical fiction in a made up setting :) I'd like to try contemporary fiction sometime.

What POV do you write from?

Jeremy, do you have portions of your novel posted here? If so I'll take a look. :) (I don't read or write historical fiction though, so you might get more helpful feedback from others who are more familiar with the genre.)

Liesje, I can imagine that it would be hard to write a novel while you're in school. Have you gotten very far with it?

First person comes easily to me, but I think we should write from the POV that best fits the story. My first novel is written in first person. My second novel is also first person, but with multiple POV characters. My next novel is going to be in third person.

How about you, do you have a preferred POV?

Jess - yes it's very hard! I had a wee burst on it earlier this year, but I'm at uni now and really bogged down in essays and tests, so I haven't worked on it at all in the last few weeks. Hopefully during the holidays...

Thus far I've been writing in third person, but I was thinking the other day that I should try writing in first person, because it's sort of like writing a diary--which comes very naturally to me. I think that would help me to get into it a bit more.

Essays, opinion pieces, commentary (I'm a good "opiner") :)

Creatively, I sort of do the above but in dialogue format - it's helping me build characters for several stories I have bouncing around in my head.

I've created a small bed & breakfast located in my favorite spot in town, put a public restaurant downstairs at street level, made the place several decades old so it attracts many locals and "long timers" - and friends of the owner, my primary character I've been working on for some time.

They come it, sit down, and talk - all manner of things - politics, religion, current events. As I said, it's a good way for me to create characters, imbue them with personality, likes, dislikes (values), and test them in expression.

I write a few things. That is probably my downfall, not picking just one thing.

I've never tried to get published traditionally or otherwise. Another downfall, huh? lol

I have a website where I put my work up. It's comedy, so to speak, but really, I'm not kidding around. I have stuff about relationships, marriage, parenting, blah blah blah.

I also have a kid's section on there where I have stories for children.

I must say that I do have a good time doing it for the most part. but like you said, the economy can be hard on us (and sales).

i guess we keep plugging away because it's what we want to do.

I'm interested in several subjects, but only have so much time. God, Family and my day job come first, so I have to do what I can, when I can.

Lately, I've been publishing my personal Bible studies in a blog. Just recently I began self-publishing my studies on the Book of Psalms through the Lulu publishing service. Volume One is now out, containing my studies on the first 30 psalms. I plan to publish in five parts. In my signature there is a link to a website about the book, with links there to my online store and to my blog. In addition to being available now through Lulu, it should also be available through Amazon in a couple of months. And if I wish, I can pay fees to also have my book listed in other book retail catalogs, and even provide the oportunity for brick-and-mortar stores to purchase copies for their stock. This is a very low budget method, but it is a method I can afford to do at the moment.

My novel is in third person but there are no portions of it here. I post them as soon as possible. Thanks.

When you're ready to post a portion of your novel, put it in the sub-forum that you see when you enter the Writer's Guild forum – look for "Creative Writing" Post your poems, stories, books in progress, non-fiction, fictional fantasy, daily articles & other creative works.

Let us know when you've put something in there so we can go check it out!

I'm writing the story of someone who was miraculously healed of multiple personalities (just one extra one). It has been a very long work in progress, but the good thing is that I have already been told that it will sell when I'm ready to put it out there – but I'm not ready yet. The more I learn about writing, the more I realize that sections of my book would be far more effective if rewritten. (The better written the story, the longer it's shelf life in the book stores.) So, I just keep plugging away at it.

I am content to trust in the Lord's perfect timing for it to go to print.

Janet, do you mean that you already have an agent or publishing house waiting to buy your story? If so, that's awesome!

Good writing does take a lot of time and hard work; you're right to make sure that it's as well done as possible before sending your story out. :)

Best of luck,
Jess

Writing happens to be one of my favorite hobbies. My main inspiration for writing is R.A. Salvatore. I have a great many of his books and love them all. However, my least favorite part of his books is the end when they are done. So I thought to myself: what if I started writing? I could shape a world as I see fit and make my own stories. Thats what made me start. Since then, I have written one book already, but it got destroyed when my basement got flooded :sigh:. I have recently started on my second one and I have a lot more hope for this one. Now let me ask you this: do you prefer to write with a pencil and paper, or type on a computer? Oh, and I write fantasy novels. Im hoping to get this next one published...

I type. Writing by hand feels too slow. :)
I do some of the time, but for me, nothing beats handwriting in my leather bound book with its gold lettering on the front and my name.

Honestly though, I dont believe Im that good. I always feel like its just not as good as others, and that Im not unique. I did start writing something in another thread and I think I got carried away. You can check it out if you like, I think its in the "Whats your favorite character" thread.

Forgive me, but I was wondering if I could inquire about a friend request. I believe that we may have similar interests and I would like to add you to my empty repertoire of friends. You would be my first one here, if you should choose to accept. Unfortunately, I could not send you a pm, so I may as well ask you on here. Thank you for your time.
