• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi All,

I've been doing fairly well this past week, and I've been thinking about staying doing well. I know that when I eat right and force myself to be with my friends, I do better. Also, accomplishing little tasks that need to be done instead of leaving them helps me to feel better. I especially know I need to do these things when I don't want to.

What do you to help prevent the depression from getting bad when you're feeling good? What warning signs make you kick into motion to prevent having a problem?

In Him,
Kristen

Well, I can always tell when the depression tries to creep up on me again, because I notice the change in my thoughts. When I'm doing well, my thoughts are focused outward (on other things than myself) or are more positive. When my thoughts start gearing towards my feelings and my self, I become less stable. I've noticed that my thoughts are the driving force of most of my depressive states.

If I feel it coming on, I speak scripture to myself and claim my right to joy. I try to get involved in activities that take my attention *off* of myself, for it's difficult for me to be focused completely externally and to be worried about my feelings at the same time. I usually have to make the choice not to live by my feelings, as they can be extremely deceptive.

Eating right and avoiding excess sweets and refined carbohydrates always helps me as well. My energy levels seem to be more positive and my focus is much clearer.

Being goal-oriented is great. They can provide motivation, and when the accomplishment comes, it's well worth the time.

I hope you find the joy that is yours!

Yes, I've noticed this too... when my thinking is skewed, this usually leads my mood more.

At the start of the feelings, I usually forget that my feelings lie to me. However, when I get my thoughts straight, I remember this. I too have tried to read scripture - I find myself gravitating to the psalms. Are there any particular scriptures that stand out for you and help a lot?

I stink at this one. :sigh:

Thanks for reminding me of these things.

Just keep reachingout and seek help if you need to. God does heal but at times he heals when not expected there are no time limits

Good for you to rely on the bible and prayer that is the most important thing to do.

Depperssion and things are real and there is a stigma still.

I usually take a bath or a shower or put on some good music. I play with my birds. I go to Blessings Exchange here on CF.

When I notice I am getting depressed I get out of the house even if I don't want to. I use to isolate myself and that is not a good thing to do. I go for walks, go to the mall, or just go for a drive. I have also learned to talk to others. If you hold things in they only fester and seem worse than what they are.

Heya sister,

I just enjoyed an artistic process which is theroputic.

Write "Morning Pages" to help unload all the thoughts in your mind. Also gives you a look at your conciousness. Do not fear the depressing parts. Just say what is on your mind in the morning.

Others talked about taking a walk.

Lastly is when you have something in your heart. Grab a pen/pencil and paper. Let it out as a poem, lyrics for a song, or whatever. Share a part of the book on it.

If you conceptualize launching a project, you will begin to understand the issue of overthinking. Think of your project as "the arrow of desire." Imagine yourself eyeing the bull's-eye, pulling back the bow--and then thinking about it. Worrying about it. Considering whether you are aiming exactly right or whether you should be smidgen higher or lower. your arm begins to get tired. Then your aim begins to get shaky. If you manage to finally shoot the arrow, it does not sail with confidence and strength. You have that in your vacillation about exactly how you should shoot. In short, you have mistaken the beginning something with ending something. ...
...You have denied the process of making art because you are so focused on the product: Will this be a bull's-eye? We forget that intention is what creates direction. If we aim with the eye of our heart--"That I desire to do"-- then we aim truly and well.

Give it a shot. Sometimes it helps opens the door to the heart and soul. Better see what has wounded your soul.

I remind myself I need a NEW START:

N -- Nutrition. Make sure I'm getting Omega-3s and Tryptophan.
E -- Exercise. Always helps to take a walk.
W --Water. Consume 1 ounce of water for every 2 pounds I weigh.

S -- Sunshine, sunshine, sunshine. Get outside, make some vitamin D. Get the melatonin working at the right time of day instead of confusing my body clock.
T -- Temperance in all things. If I'm overloading one area of my life, I need to balance it out.
A -- Fresh Air. Get the lungs working.
R -- Rest. Ensure that I'm getting enough rest (for me, this is at least 8 hours a night, and I must get to bed by 10:00 pm.)
T -- Trust in the Divine. This probably should be first as it is so important.

This is awesome! May I share it with others not at CF?
