The thread about KFC led me to wonder what (if anything) people here avoid with respect to food and why they avoid it.
I avoid certain additives simply because I believe that they are not safe. Specifically, I avoid BHT, BHA, TBHQ and nitrates and nitrites (such as sodium nitrite).
I only know of one popular (as opposed to the "organic" brands) breakfast cereal that does not contain BHT: Kellogg's Crispix. And the percentage of other processed products like cereal bars, cookies, etc. that do not contain BHT, BHA or TBHQ is not much better.
I have had to avoid--much to my dismay--hot dogs and pepperoni because almost every such product contains sodium nitrite. However, I have noticed in the last couple of years several new products--such as frozen pizzas with uncured pepperoni--that address that concern.
