The hypostatic union is the doctrine that person of Christ comprises two natures, a fully divine nature and a fully human nature, that must be united without being mixed and must be distinguished without being separated. I believe it became official dogma at the Council of Chalcedon, and separated the Monophysites from the rest of Christianity.
