Breakfast. Contemplating a busy day ahead. (Have a funeral to take on Monday and they always absorb all available time to do well).

Hope you're okay, Deirdre?
It's work related. I really thought this new job was the answer to everything. Like it came from God, a true blessing. I was in a job for a few years prior to this one, and left last year to come here, but it's been such a weird place to work. I received a promotion, so it would seem like everything should be okay, but it still isn't. I don't know what to do. If I leave, will God be angry with me, as if I'm not considering this a blessing? If that makes sense. Thank you for asking.

You're going to preside over a funeral, you mean?

It's my experience that any one thing is seldom the answer to the everything. That's a tough place for you to be in, though.

I doubt God will be angry, but I'm guessing there's a whole lot more there to unpack behind that question. Have you thought about maybe seeing a spiritual director to work through the issues?

Yeah, I'll be presiding over a funeral. Tricky one with a lot of family conflict going on, so it's been an interesting week...!

I've never thought of that, seeing a spiritual director. Maybe I will. Thank you!

I think you have an interesting vocation. It sounds rewarding.

What sort of stuff do you carry, Hamm? Does it vary a lot, or is it the same all the time, or...? (I know nothing about the world of logistics, clearly!)

I think you have an interesting vocation. It sounds rewarding.

It can be rewarding. It can be lots of other harder words, too.

The day I recognised God was calling me to ministry, I was frustrated with my job, and didn't know what to do with my life, and really was exasperated while I was praying. It went a bit like, "Well, Lord, you made me, and you know my strengths and my weaknesses and my gifts, even better than I do; so here it all is, it's all yours, just tell me what I'm supposed to do with it!" (Read that in a fairly huffy tone).

And my sense of what God said in reply was - If you're really offering me all of it, then come and serve me.

And now fifteen or so years on from that, I can honestly say this job involves everything I have to bring to it. All my skills and gifts and strengths and experience - and weakness and wounds and cultural baggage and whatever else - I can't hold back or wall off parts of myself to keep separate from the work, because this work goes to the core of who you are as a human being before God, and in community with others.

So yes, it can be really rewarding; and it can be incredibly hard and exhausting and it can wound you in ways I think few other jobs could. The only reason I can survive it is in God's grace which gives me the strength and the courage to keep going. On my own I wouldn't have had what it takes, honestly.

Sorry, that might have been a slightly self-indulgent ramble! The moral of the story might be; pray for your pastor.

It varies. Recently I’ve hauled foam, power tools, snacks, cleaning supplies, cat litter, and giant rolls of paper used to make cardboard boxes.

That's a beautiful story. And insightful. I should pray what you did, as well. It might help where I'm at with things, in my career, right now. I think you're right, alone...we can't do much. Or even imagine doing what God calls us to do. But, through Christ, we are strong. I can imagine that what you do can be exhausting, too. I do think too that we can all serve God, even if the work isn't faith-based, you know?

Absolutely! Serving God is not just for inside churches (buildings or institutions).

And just as well; because if we were all inside the churches, who'd be reaching out to the world?

Foam....?

Is anyone else picturing a truck full of those things that go in bean bags? ^_^
I’ve actually hauled something similar. :)

This was some sort of foam containers, I think.

Happy Purim everyone!

Just got to work; my wife and I each brought in a container of Hamantaschen.

I had a much better day at work. I didn't realize that I wasn't trusting God enough, but each day, I grow deeper in faith, learning about the areas within me that need to change. It's not always easy to follow Jesus, for He shines the light on areas that need fixing, but it's always worth it. :)

Have reached that part of the week that a previous boss of mine used to call "ministry unto the photocopier" (that is, printing all the things for Sunday)!
