  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A friend of mine just got a Compaq r3000z, which runs the amd64 architecture. I'm installing FreeBSD on it later today =:p

I would probably go with an IBM Thinkpad of some sort, depending on how well FBSD supports them. I'm attracted to the professional "squareness" that their laptops have, as opposed to HP/Dell/Acer/etc.'s tendency to make nasty curvy designs.

Sony. They're terrific--and even run linux pretty well. The absolute pits are the IBM Thinkpads. A colleague of my dad's had one... they completely replaced most of the motherboard about 3 times in warranty, it broke again out of warranty, and he ended up buying a Sony.

I'd recommend Acer. But it all depends on what you want out of your laptop, I'm guessing you want something with decent power, good graphic capabilities, and decent form factor, and don't want to spend too much. Acer makes good middle-of-the-road type laptops.

i got Acer! Acer Aspire.
Its cool and practical. It doesn't really try to be as flashy as Sony or HP but I think Acer works hard to give you a nice all round package.

I'm not an expert on Computers but an AMD chip in a laptop seems a bit too much. I think an intel chip in a Laptop is probably a safer bet.

Hey everyone! i was just wondering...what do you think are the best laptop brands out there? I was thinking Toshiba and Sony. Who else is on the list of good laptops?
Well I have a Gateway right now and may get a Toshiba next year. I'm not sure what the deals look like right now but Toshiba has always had some great models to choose from.

I currently own a Fujitsu Stylistic 1200 tablet, with the following:
120MHz Pentium
48MB RAM
2.1GB HD

I use it on the wireless network at home and for accessing the remainder of my computers, programming, listening to music, checking email, etc.

WOW are you running Linux on that? That would be a really nice little Linux portable.

Apple PowerBooks with 12-inch and 15-inch screens.
Also check out Apple iBooks , they are cheaper.

Good advice, but they're expensive. :(. Not far off the same price as the Sony though--and even more reliable!

dont get caught in the flashyness of dell or hp.
they are the cheapest because they are so limited and have cheap motherboards and low cash on there processores. (bottom of the barel) and cheapest thats why everyone has one.

I dont know about the aspire

sony is very expensive to get parts for (upgrade)

toshiba is realy good.

I prefer ibm especialy because of the mouse.it is a button in the center of the keyboard that you push one direction ar another. If you use your mouse frequently youll be glad you got it. Yes in past they had mobo problems with some models but that should be taken care of by now.
They use quality parts not cheap junk parts like dell and hp.

so if your not using mac get toshiba or ibm.twice the quality of dell and hp hands down.

And that'd be the major reason I would never buy IBM. I hate those mice... and if you can't get replacements (like here) it's very annoying. ;). Let alone my experience of 'em is that they have cheap parts, whether Dell is the other way around... the IBM I've used broke regularly, and the Dell was pretty nice.

You're gonna hear stories about all the different brands of laptops - each manufacturer will have their downsides as well as their positives. I've heard not so good things about Toshiba, but at the same time you have posters who don't have any problems with laptops from Toshiba that they've bought. Mine's a Dell and I've had hardly any major dilemnas in the year and a half that I've owned.
