Far from limited to animé, an author I respect highly once pointed out that all plots reduce to conflict of some sort -- conflict against others, conflict with one's surroundings, or conflict within oneself. Most "good guys defeat the bad guys" plots (and I'm not putting them down by that phrasing) are in the first category, but one can have a gripping story with no violence in people working together to prevent an impending catastrophe -- many disaster movies are in this category -- and the protagonist's conquering of a weakness within him/herself can be an absolutely spellbinding story. And, of course, not all conflicts between people require violence to resolve them.

Given that formula and the OP's concerns, can anyone think of good animés that fit the second or third categories or which resolve interpersonal conflict without recourse to violence?

(And the Romans 14 reference was terrific -- that which is no problem for me may be a stumbling block to someone else, or the other way around. It sometimes seems like one of the hardest things for Christians to learn is that not everybody reacts just as you do -- that which is a temptation to sin for you, may not be for someone else, and that which is not for you, may be for someone else. Paul prescribes having compassion for the weaknesses of your brother or sister in such a case, and that strikes me as a superb thought to keep in mind.)

yep! 'Hikaru No Go', 'Initial D' and 'Cyber Formula'.
talking about violence.. you really have to look at the context of the anime. For example, 'R. Kenshin' is set in a feudal era, but it's amazing how although violence cannot be avoided, the main character is using it not to kill but to teach lessons, and nor does he go and be violent on purpose.

No, but I'm planning on it!

And I doubt I'll ever see them all, I just really want to. Lots of good stuff, I bet. :)

Totoro is good (if you dont mind giant rat things, magic acorns, and flying catbusses) ummmm... *thinking* i would say digimon (two <3 <3 <3 & four) but the bad guys usually are very creeepay (like an evil vampire morph thing, and dark angels..) but the good guys always come through. I would say the same for moncolie knights (also <3<3<3 ) with the creepy dark angel guy. Ah! try metabots, kirby, pokemon, or sonic the hedgehog. Not many good older age animes are out there....

I forgot about another clean anime I saw. It's called Piano, and it's a 'slice of life' anime that follows a girl in school as she deals with her friends and a guy she likes. The central element in the show (obviously) is her piano and the lessons she takes for it. It's a slow moving show, but there was nothing objectionable in it (that I remember). You can find it on animesuki.

i would suggest watching what kinds of anime u watch. A good anime that I have found is called CSF and Seal, which are two hard core christian animes. They are both really well done. Also, another anime is called Angelic layer, it to is alright. Just watch out for animes that have any form of magic and violence..aka Inuyasha (yes i know many of u love Inuyasha, but InuYasha stands for dog demon, which he is partly, so think about it) It is good to hear that u are not so deep into anime, i was very deep into anime as well and just begining to get back on the right side of the track.

Some people have allready mentioned My Neighbor Totoro... that defenitely fits into that 3rd category. It was Miyazaki's attempt at creating a high quality childrens' movie that didn't have a villian.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this already, but anything by Miyazaki is really good, and it's "for kids" but everyone I know likes his movies a ton. With the exception of Princess Mononoke, anything else he has done is clean and imaginative.

-Spirited Away
-My Neighbor Tuturo (sp?)
-Kiki's Delivery Service
-Castle in the Sky

If you don't think those movies are ok enough to watch, then you really don't have much else that would be ok to watch IMO. Anyway, check them out I think you'd like em.

Tokyo Godfathers was good. Three homeless people find an abandoned baby on Christmas Eve, which changes their lives around.

Blazin4Christ, I find it weird that you want to avoid Kiki's Delivery Service but will watch Spirited Away, which does also have a witch in it (which by the way, is also in a lot of fairy tales and Wizard of Oz. You could even say Marry Poppins was a witch).

BTW, I noticed that no one mentioned Grave of the Fireflies. It's essentially a drama, with a sad ending. It's about two kids in Japan during WWII who lose their family and struggle to survive by themselves.

hi i'm a former mega Anime fan, I used to love animes that were pretty high rated because of the violence and fighting, ever since I gave my life back to Christ I gave it up, but I still would like to watch some of it but I don't want to wach anything at a PG level or higher, some shows like MegaMan NT warrior I watch, but I get tempted at times to watch stuff like DBZ, and than that tempts me to watch higher stuff and make more graphic AMVs and stuff, I really struggle with it in a way, anyone know any animes that are good but not PG rated that a Christian can watch? ive been lookin round for some, and I want replys from Christians, and I don't want the "Why you give up graphic animes? even the Bible is graphic" routine, please just give some good responses regarding the subject
you don't have to change your'e way of life to be a christian. you can still read and watch all the bad and gory manga and anime you want. as long as it does not affext who you are or truly want to be. remember that........

Evangelion has some Christian imagery in it. It has a lot of mecha battles and supposedly some of the best characters of anime. It's really a classic.:)
