But the point is a good one; once established in an extremophile niche, an alternative form of life would have less competition and a better chance of out-competing it.Indeed. Some researchers have suggested an independent line may exist amongst microbes, in some - to most life - extreme environment. They've suggested we be alert to the possibility. In some ways, were it discovered, it would be the equivalent of finding extra-terrestrial life. I'd love to give citations for this, but at present it is merely a recollection of something read, somewhere, in the last decade.
