Climate scientists are increasingly concerned that we are getting close to climate tipping points. These are thresholds beyond which the Earth's climate system could change rapidly and irreversibly. Some of the most concerning tipping points include:What tipping point? I don‘t see any so far.
- The melting of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, which could raise sea levels by several meters and inundate coastal cities around the world.
- The collapse of the Amazon rainforest, which could release billions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, further accelerating climate change.
- The release of methane from permafrost in the Arctic, which is a powerful greenhouse gas that could cause even more rapid warming.
If you would like to further explore tipping points, here are some links.
