I'm confused as to what the ancestors of the land cow were. Is it the mesonychid, or is it a whale?

From what I can tell, mesonychids split up and a few of their descendents evolved into gradations of what would eventually become the whale, and the cow was a continuation of some other mesonychids.

If this is right, can anyone help me find gradations between the mesonychid and the modern day cow? I've got someone prodding me for "transitionary fossils".

Cows are artiodactyls. They are not mesonychids. Whales now appear to be artiodactyls as well. They too are not mesonychids although at one time it was argued that there was a connection..

I just went to talk.origins and found a list of transitionary fossils for both whales and artiodactyls. I'm good.

It should be noted that it is still believed that whales are related to mesonychids, it's just a more distant relationship.

They claim they are related to earthworms also, it is just a little bit more distant of a relationship. In fact we are all related to slugs, but they are very distant relations to us, so we do not have to invite them to dinner or anything like that. We do not have a social obligation for that distant of a relation.

We can invite them for dinner, though. :yum:

Slugs are disgusting. I use to find them in the garden and I would sling them out into the driveway. The birds would let them cook in the sun until they were dry and then they would swoop in and grab em. But they would not eat them when they were slimy.

Whales and cows related? Yeah right! Evolution is hilarious!
Perhaps you have a better explanation for the genetic similarities between whales and cows? How about the old standby "common designer?" Then you can explain why a common designer would make an aquatic carnivore and a terrestrial herbivore so similar genetically.

Very nice, John. Do you also pin down insects and pull off their wings?

I thought slugs were one of God's little creatures? Or are they the twisted and evil results of "The Fall?"

Two words.

Cows don't swim.

Genetics is a bunch of 20th century scientific hodge podge, everybody knows whales don't give birth to cows, I don't need "genetics" to tell me that. Next!

Wow.

How does the obvious fact that whales don't give birth to cows explain away all the evidence that they have a common ancestor?

I am also amazed to hear that "genetics" is a "bunch of 20th century hodge podge." I suppose that is a good thing since you don't have any need to understand genetics (or evolution).

Science Bad.

Guess you shouldn't be using that computer, huh?

Man, you people need to catch on to sarcasm quicker to avoid posts like this.

The thing is, on there forums, it's impossible to tell. Unless there's a line that specifically states that, "In case you haven't noticed, I'm being sarcastic", you just can't tell.

For instance, if someone said, "I bet there's a crystal hard diamond at the center of the Earth, and it's extremely cool there!", you'd think he was kidding, but in reality...

Yeah, the constant barrage of almost self-parodying arguments here doesn't help people distinguish between sacrasm and insanity very well. It's very hard to tell if someone is a really, really, really good comedian or mentally disturbed. But come on, just about everyone on here knows Fear. I figured that the atheist icon would clue people in.

Slugs are disgusting.
It's escargot minus the got. ;) It's likely that slugs are a delicacy somewhere. Mmmm...protein! :yum:

Birds generally don't like the taste of the mucus that slugs secrete.

Well of course it sounds stupid the way you phrased it but that's because you missed out the vital part to the argument that holds it together. The crystal is surrounded by cold liquid gold.

You see, not so crazy when you include all the facts.
