Amen. I'm not from West Virginia but we have some land up there. It's not known for its crime. I think that's why it's not very popular with the media.

There was a recent record-breaking blizzard in West Virginia. It shows how it was totally ignored by the media. The weather channel pretty much played it down, too:

This text is from a county emergency manager out in Phillippi, West Virginia after the recent snow storm last week in northern WV.

WEATHER BULLETIN

Up here in the hills we just recovered from a Historic event --- may I even say a "Weather Event" of "Biblical Proportions" --- with a historic blizzard of up to 10" inches of snow and winds to 30 MPH that broke trees in half, , closed all roads, isolated scores of communities and cut power to 80% of the County. This began October 25th and as of 10/31/05 many are still with power and of course no email.

FYI:
George Bush did not come....
FEMA staged nothing....
No one howled for the government...
No one even uttered an expletive on TV...
Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards.....
No one asked for a FEMA Trailer House....
No one looted....
Phil Cantori of the Weather Channel did not come....
And Geraldo Rivera did not move in.

Nope, we just melted snow for water, sent out caravans to pluck people out of snow engulfed cars, fired up wood stoves, broke out coal oil lanterns or Aladdin lamps, and put on an extra layer of clothes because up here it is 'work or die'. We did not wait for some affirmative action
government to get us out of a mess created by being immobilized by a welfare program that trades votes for 'sittin at home' checks.

Even though a Category "5" blizzard of this scale has never fallen this early...we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves.

"In my many travels, I have noticed that once one gets north of about 48 degrees North Latitude, 90% most of the world's social problems evaporate."

Is W.Virginia a nice place to raise a family? Is it affordable?

I'm in Vermont now.. But I lived in South West PA until 1998.. 12 Miles from Morgantown, WV.. and it is a nice place to live.. Clean Air.. Not much crime.. and cost of living was low.. but so were the wages..

used to be a lot of coal mines in SW PA and WVA.. but the industry was on its way out.. not sure what industries are active there now.. but you could always check the papers online or their job service..

Best wishes to you..

Hey all fellow Mountaineers. I was from Charles Town (by Harper's Ferry). Now I live in Nebraska but my family is still there so I get back that way every now and again. I miss the mountains sooooooo much. They don't have so much as a bump in the road out where I am now.:help:

DH and I are looking into moving into WV, Pendleton County area, cause it seem soo nice there! He lived there from the time he was 12 until he was 16 and he's always wanted to go back. We went yesterday and I fell in love, too. It'll take some getting used to "Mountain Justice", but it's super cool! We're hoping to buy land there and have a log cabin (kit) up by summer. Hubby's gonna put in for a job that's still in VA, but commute 43 miles to go to work, if all of this is God's will.

A friend of dhs put down boards with nails in them to keep poachers out of the woods. My dad has always been a big animal rights person when it comes to poaching and stuff (and he hunts, case anyone thought hunters were evil or something :D ), so we thought it was cool. They take care of things on their own, I guess that's what I meant.
