The United Evangelical Brethern were very similar to Methodists and one of its founders (I don't remember names) was discipled by Methodists when he accepted Christ and another founder of the denomination participated in ceremonies making Francis Asbury the first Methodist bishop. I may be wrong but I think the Brethern were Scandanavian or German immigrants and it wasn't doctrinal differences that separated them from the Methodists but cultural differences.

A couple weeks ago a friend who attended a UM college told me she and the other students attended a UMC and the profs attended another one across the street. The one she attended was originally a UEB congregation and the reason there was another one across the street is because it was originally a Methodist congregation. Any way she mentioned there was a hat worn once a year with candles on it. She said it was reall cool.

I didn't know that many of the Pentecostal churches were a break off of the Methodist church until my church did a study of spiritual gifts a couple of years ago. According to the study, there was some controversy in the church regarding speaking in tongues and, I believe healing, and the group that broke off has evolved into what is the Pentecost church today. I just thought that was pretty interesting.

Joshua Howard, in the statment you made about the Methodist and Welseyan churches not adhereing to holiness, what do you mean? I am curious as to what has made you feel that way.

Okay, I'm going to answer this question for once and for all... Yes, the Pentecostal movement is a child of the Methodist church (thought, obviously, as it has evolved quited a bit, it has influences from others, as well...), But doctrinal differences between the different bodies in the Pentecostal/Charismatics (The Charismatic Movement, for those who dont know, would be pentacostalism's child... Look! You guys are grandparents!!! :D ) by themselves thay they have two different categories... Methinks trying to incorporate them int the Wesleyan/Nazarene/Methodist chunk of the church would be a bit of a stretch... too many different opinions, and pentacostalism in large enough now that we have our own forum on CF! :D People will go there for pentacostalism, not here... theres my two cents on including them in the list (though the list is a nifty idea... I like it... perhaps I shall take that over to the Charismatic forum...) Oh... Back at the first page of the thread (towards the bottom), I think it was 'HopeTheyDance' that said something about infant baptism... I just felt like clarifying ~ there may be (and there probably is...) a small pentecostal denom. or two out there that baptizes infants, but in general, I dont think its something very many of us do ~ I know my church doesn't...

Blessings...

Greetings to you, AdamDavid, my new friend! :)
My understanding is that the AG was primarily started by a group of Methodists and a group of Baptists, but I think you are correct in feeling that we've diverged too much for a successful reunification. However, I do think it's way cool that we're grandparents, and there are Charismatic United Methodists to this day. :)

You are correct. Are you thinking of Jacob Otterbein? I'm rusty, and need to check that out myself (including the spelling of his name.)
Only language differences seperated the EUB from the MEC. Wesley placed great importance on preaching in the venacular, which is one tough job when one group of Methodists speaks English and the other German.
Both denoms kept in contact with one another, and there never seem to have been any real doctrinal differences.
When all spoke the same language, we merged, forming the United Methodist Church, so that our denominational names were combined.

A couple weeks ago a friend who attended a UM college told me she and the other students attended a UMC and the profs attended another one across the street. I belonged to one EUB church, and I loved it! I also stayed with friends for several months after having a house fire and was lucky enough to attend their small town UMC church where half the congregation had retained their German culinary skills. The ladies made their own German noodles and they baked an angelfood cake that was to die for! Now I know why it's called "angelfood"! I wish I hadn't been too shy to ask for the recipe, because I may never taste its like again. :sigh:
You wouldn't believe how generous they were to me when I lost everything in that fire! They gave me some wonderful furniture! Here I am, over twenty years later typing away with my computer sitting on a butcherblock kitchen table they gave me. Isn't that something? :)

I believe that I'm the only actual troublemaker here, and you already handled me just fine, so I think it's safe to wander over now and then.;)

~Laughs hysterically and loudly...~

*ahem* Laugh all you wish, but it's far safer for you to visit here, where WesleyJohn knows to keep a careful eye on me, than have me, your UMC Grandma, come visit you in your forum.

Next, as a part of my Evil Daunting Grand Plan, I'm going to sign your guestbook. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Folks, I just met Adam when we ended up, if not on opposite sides of a debate, close enough for government work, and I can't convey to you how gracious and gentlemanly he was in a situation which can lead to the worst of misunderstandings and hard feelings.
Really, he's a prince among men, and I'm honored to be his friend, so I hope you'll forgive me for going off-topic to attempt to convey this to him.
If the church of my ancestors (we have a curcuit rider in our family, whose grave we visit, and have had a Methodist minister in every generation until mine) had the slightest positive influence on the formation of his denomination, then I couldn't be more proud to be Adam's "Grandma".

Nope. :) Just being honest, Adam. This is one time I get to be honest without people thinking a house fell on my sister. I can't tell you how gratifying that is, and it makes for a nice change, especially since no one no one is likely try to eject me from the forum for it, which can be much like like attempting this:

Adam, I have way too much free time for my own good...or yours. LOL

Do you think WJ would start a thread for me titled "The Planster will Post Stupid Images for You Here, Tell Bad Jokes, and Generally Jerk You Around."? If he did that, then I'd never swerve off-topic. Personally, I think that a Padded Cell thread would be far more useful than a Vent thread, but probably why I think that's because when I used to take walks in the park, squirrels handed me nuts.

I'm still planning your guestbook entry. It has to be special!
Adam, do you have an mp3 player?

I used to be United Methodist, and my UMC church used to be United Evangelical Brethren (I think) back in the day. Anyone know anything about them?
The Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) were an ethnic Methodist group started by German immigrants who discovered their beliefs were similar to Wesleyan thought.
