So, God chastening His flock is always “smashing the sheepies heads”. I think they call this exaggeration. Some people think disciplining a child with a good biblical spanking is child-abuse, too, but it is only because they do not understand the Word.

What we may consider severe or painful or even catastrophic may not mean the same thing to God, especially when it is for our ultimate good. However harsh the disciple, God can comfort us in it and make it work to our good.

So, God chastens us by the Word. How does that work? Wouldn’t the Word only work on a receptive heart and a receptive heart would not need chastening. What about the Christian with the calloused heart, the deaf ear, the closed mind? How does God chasten such a child?

He doesn't. They go off and do their own thing, and suffer for it, and eventually either come back or grow so calloused they reject God. Isn't God doing it.

How did God chasten the Corinthians who abused the Lord’s Table? It wasn’t with the Word, Zub, it was with sickness and death. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s[ body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world (1 Cor. 11).

No, their judgement was the sickness and disease. The chastening of the Lord was the Lord telling them to repent so they could receive the healing that was theirs at the Lord's Table.

Blessings,

I couldn't find the book I was looking for about Psalm 23
What I remember was that the rod was used for protecting the sheep from going into danger and the staff was for training and guidence.
Psalm 23:4
even tho I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death
I fear no evil
for You are with me
Your rod and your staff
the comfort me.
I don't know if this helped or not.I think your asking in what ways He disciplines. Only disciples are disciplined.

The rod was also used to hold the sheep down by the neck so the shepherd could inspect them for injury or parasites. It didn't injure the sheep, it just kept them immobile long enough for the shepherd to check them over in love. :)

God didn't chasten them for their not discerning the Lord's body, they brought their sickness and early death on themselves because they did not discern that the broken body of Jesus was for their healing. IMO

Many teachers today make that same error.

Who is they? Friends of yours?

I am the one that thinks that God chastens us with his Word, you are the one that thinks God putting cancer on us to teach us a lesson is a valid Bible truth.

Some people think disciplining a child with a good biblical spanking is child-abuse, too, but it is only because they do not understand the Word.

I am not one of those people. Ask my children about Mr. Smacky. Yes, but if I still spanked my children when they were 30, then I would be abusing them. I am a mature son of God, and God doesn't smack me about the head to get my attention.

What we may consider severe or painful or even catastrophic may not mean the same thing to God, especially when it is for our ultimate good. However harsh the disciple, God can comfort us in it and make it work to our good.

I wonder how harsh sick people think you are when you are telling them they need to learn more about God, and are slack hearers and cold hearted.

I think they are under attack from satan, reaping what they sow, or just unfortunate, and that they can receive complete healing from God due to His complete hope.

Which of us is giving a message that is positive, a message of the kingdom?

Tell you what Tree, next time you get the flu, don't rebuke it and walk in divine health, come and visit me, and I can have it too.

Then I can grow in God.

How about I just go and slice my arms with a knife now to teach me some more and have a relationship with the Lord?

I can't have one with His Word, that would be too simple.

You mean we have been in sin by standing on His Word that says He heals us?? Gosh, golly, gee.

This is total malarkey. Can you guys believe that supposedly mature Christians are buying into this bunk?

The logical conclusion is that we all go to the contagious ward of the hospital and try and catch a few things. If sickness is that good, let's go for it.

All those doctors working against God - relieving suffering when it is teaching people things.

Tut tut.

;)

When my Pentecostal denomination I was ministering with "let me go", they were telling me that they were concerned about the pastoral implications of my view of healing.

I thought - what about the pastoral implications of telling the sick that they had more to learn than the rest of us. Hideous.

Cheers,

I was bored so here's my take on what ya'll aren't talking about. I'm sure it makes complete sence to someone. Just not me.

So, if I was born and lived in heaven, I would never know God's grace and mercy?
*******************************
Grace and mercy would not be needed
What about those Christians in Africa who cannot read nor yet have have access to a Bible in their language much less a preacher (there is a shortage of preachers in Africa, you know)?
*************************************
God says then the Word is planted in their heart

It wasn't God who didn't want Paul exalted, it was satan.
***********************************
It was used by God for his humility

It is not a reference to God breaking our legs or smashing our head in to make us understand broken legged people more
**********************************
as I posted prev. His rod of discipline is for
protection for us
Wouldn’t the Word only work on a receptive heart and a receptive heart would not need chastening.
****************************************
then why do we have the Word?
How did God chasten the Corinthians who abused the Lord’s Table? It wasn’t with the Word, Zub, it was with sickness and death
**********************************
as an example to obey the Word
So what is the REAL issue?
**************************
good question
Sound doctrine does not go against ALL Characters of God. The Bible teaches that God is love; some have interpreted this in such a way as virtually to deny that He is just, which the Bible also teaches. The biblical doctrine of God's goodness so far that it is made to contradict His holiness. The biblical doctrine of God's compassion cancel out His truth.
**************************************
now, that makes no sence to me at all
If God is ALL good, then Solomon would not write the negative side of God in Ecclesiastes.
**************************************
Solomon was writing on the fact that anything outside of God is all in vain.
Opps, I jumped a page.
I'm completely lost. Where did that thread go/
The rod was also used to hold the sheep down by the neck so the shepherd could inspect them for injury or parasites. It didn't injure the sheep, it just kept them immobile long enough for the shepherd to check them over in love
**************************************
His Presence is a substaining power for us. When we'er in the valley we should simply remain there and rest in the Lord.
God didn't chasten them for their not discerning the Lord's body, they brought their sickness and early death on themselves because they did not discern that the broken body of Jesus was for their healing
**************************************
sounds like it was for hypocracy to me
God chastens us with his Word
*************************
as any good conscience will tell you
come and visit me, and I can have it too.
*********************************
divine health or the flu

“They” is a figure of speech, Zz, something you seem to be having a bit of a problem with.

Hmmmm. So, when do we stop being children, Zz? When my son was 13 he thought he was too mature to spank, too. He was wrong.

Grace is God giving you things you don't deserve.

As part of creation, whether you sin or not, you would have received grace - things you don't deserve - just by being in heaven.

Adam had grace in the garden. He had done nothing to deserve Eden, to deserve Eve, to deserve authority, to deserve seed.

Yet, God in His grace gave them to him anyway!

Wonderful!

You don't think there is a difference between 13 and 30? Ah well.

If I did not tell them it was something they need to consider I would not love them very much.

Better idea: tell them about the God who bore their sicknesses and carried their diseases.

Cheers,
