Well, other than, "I just wanted to share the story to fellow Christians in the hope that they would find it inspiring ....", (which means you posted this in the wrong forum), you still haven't stated what your prayer was, specifically.

We thanked God for the food and asked Him to bless those less fortunate, thanked Him for the fellowship, and thanked Him for blessing us.

If you 'just wanted to share the story to fellow Christians', then why didn't you post it in the Christians Only sections? Was there another reason you posted it here?

I haven't posted anything on that board, but I know the there are Christians on this board and since I interact with them here, I wanted to share it with the ones that I interact with.

We thanked God for the food because He ultimately allows us to be able to have the food, and we are so fortunate for that.

If everyone in your group is christian, than that's nice. I would probably fall over if we had a prayer before a meeting. My old boss is a Catholic but other than him I have no idea who is what in my co outside our Hindu and Jain folk. In my old dept there were a number of folk that would celebrate their Hindu holidays and bring in food. We'd all get together at some point during the day and enjoy the festivities. That was nice.

As well as being a Christian holiday, Christmas is also an American tradition. If I was in Iraq or some other country that didn't celebrate Christmas as a country, I wouldn't expect to be off. Same with Thanksgiving - I wouldn't expect to be off for it if I lived in Japan.

And the Christians stole this time of year from the Pagans, yada yada yada. I too hate the fact that I have to put off for my holy days (Samhain, Yule, Imbolg, Ostara, Beltane, Litha, Lammas, Mabon) but so far I've had to grin and bear it...imagine that. To be honest, if my company VP led the group in prayer, I would leave the room until it was over but thats just me. Its out of place, inappropriate, and should not be tolerated. I'm glad you had your feel good moment but I'm sure many of your peers just wanted the guy to hurry and shut up. Thank goodness my company doesn't do such things!

Halloween is more popular than Christmas now. Even moreso in schools.

I guess such an "official" prayer touches a very human condition: the need to be part of a group.

Of course, this also has the negative effect of excluding everyone who is not part of the group.

Skeptics/Infidels/Freethinkers/Atheists/Humanists/Progressives/Liberals etc., etc., etc..

You guys have a massive group.

And political power to go with it.

Is your office closed for Ramadan? Eide? Rosh Hashana? Passover? Understand? It's only good for you, and no one else. And that makes you happy? How do you think the non-Christians feel about that? Is it fair? Would you like it if the government gave people Eide off, but you had to either work Christmas Eve and Day, or use vacation to celebrate them? Are you able to think beyond love for yourself, and love your neighbor?

I have not heard anyone complain about it or even mention it. It happened last year also, and I never have heard anyone speak up against it or complain.

Well, why should I resort to my "own group" - to the exclusion of all those outside, instead of finding a common ground where I could commune with all people?

But I forgot, Christians like to be apart of the "world".

Sorry, I think you misunderstood me. Someone asked about what if they prayed to some goddess or whatever and I said I wouldn't respect that but the reason I wouldn't is that I thought they were just making up a goddess to pray to. If it were someone seriously praying to Mary or whoever else they pray to and they were serious about it, of course I'd be respectful. Sorry for the confusion.

I'm talking about the Christians Only sections of this board, not another board. If you just wanted to share this with other Christians, those sections would have been more appropriate. Posting it here is sharing it with Christians and non-Christians alike, and solicits replies from Christians and non-Christians alike, as has proved to be the case. In addition, most or your remarks in this thread have been in response to non-Christians' replies.

If, as you state, you just wanted to share this with other Christians for inspirational purposes, are you surprised and frustrated that you're getting a lot of non-Christians' feedback, objections and questions, or was your purpose more than just sharing it with other Christians?

I don't know anyone where I work that is Hindu. I have never heard of Jain until the other day on this forum.

I wasn't aware of Jains either until I started working at my current job. My co (at my specific site in Cambridge) is very diverse. Half of the people I work with aren't from the US. The mixed bag of culture is pretty cool.
