  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

We prayed at lunch!

I think Sidhe's point was that zir religious holidays aren't catered for.

^This. While getting oodles of time off in the next couple weeks is fine and dandy, I generally don't appreciate choosing between being off for sabbats and getting to go do the family-week-on-the-beach thing in the summer.

So is mine. We're closed from the 24-26 next week, close early on the 31st, and are closed Jan. 1. I mean that I have to use vacation time to be off for Beltane, Samhain, Imbolc, Mabon, Ostara, Lughnassadh, Midsummer, and Yule. I get all your holidays off by default (and, as an odd coincidence, I usually get a long weekend for my birthday, if my birthday is on a weekend).
Oh wow, you've got a lot of holidays.

Despite disagreeing you with a few times, I think you're a pretty good person. Just letting you know. :D

It's good you got to feel good about an event that happened at work.
Thank you, kind sir :). When I first joined, I know I came across the wrong way and I was really rude. I realize that now, and I'm trying to behave better! Thanks for the encouragement.

I'd have more, but I don't do Esbats. My partner does, though, so I've got Esbat every month, and twice if we get a blue moon.

She ALSO does Dark Moon rituals, so I have two holidays a month minimum, and one month I had four (One Sabbat, two Esbats, and Dark Moon).

look at us we're so pious. we even pray during lunch. woot! star in our crown.

Why was is it comforting/rewarding to do that?
It was nice to be able to do it as a group. I pray before I eat (unless I forget) by myself, but it was nice to be able to do it with everyone and have a nice time of fellowship.

I think it's a natural thing to be more brisk out of the gate. Our nature is such that we tend to first attack or go against things that are perceived to be different. It is only after reflecting on the differences, finding the similarities, and understanding that we are better able temper our words.

Hey, you're doing pretty good -- and seemingly you're trying to learn from the breadth of opinion on how to follow God that are represented here ... a rare quality that this place could stand to see more of!

I owe you an apology too. If you ever have occasion to work with or even associate with young men who were previously trapped in being rented out as boy prostitutes, you will begin to understand why I find the whole bit about "pimping out a ride" or being "the Pimpstress" something that pushes the wrong buttons. I shouldn't have taken it out on you, but my heart aches for those kids and is angry at those who victimize them.

I completely understand why you said something about the pimp thing. Let me explain why I had it - I mainly have guy friends and at my old job, the only people to call me at work were guys (friends, not boyfriends) and this guy at work answered the phone a lot and it was usually a guy calling for me, so the guy at work started calling me the "Pimpstress." So that's why I put it there and didn't think anything of it. But, as you can see, I've taken it down because without the back story, it gives the wrong message :sorry:.

I would not have participated. Anyone else who is a Christian probably wouldn't have participated either. I am thankful that I work at what I consider a Christian company :).

In our company, we have many non christians, the most of who participate in the weekly prayer in staff meetings

Huh, I just forgave you the moment I saw it.

And anyway, wouldn't it make you a pop culture hero to many here?

I was telling someone else that because they were offended by it. I'm trying to be nicer to folks.

I wasn't offended but it did affect my initial impression of you. I'm glad you have decided to be nicer.

Dang it, I really did come off the wrong way about this : (. I was truly happy that we were able to pray like we did. It was a humble, sincere prayer, but I'm afraid I made it sound like we were being boastful. I just wanted to share the story to fellow Christians in the hope that they would find it inspiring because in this day and age, things like this don't happen as much.

I didn't find from your intention snottiness or haughtiness, but, and no offense, ignorance.

Had you boss said, "I would like you all to join in our prayer", and began to lead the prayer, and concluded with, "Allah is the One True God, and Mohammed, his prophet," you would probably think, "Oh helllllllllllllllllll no. I'm not praying to your deity, nor is work the time to do it."

But because it agreed with your religion, it made you happy, but simply neglected how your neighbor would have felt.

As I said, I was Christian in college, and was fine with my teacher praying for us before Music Theory tests in the private Lutheran college, but would have had a really hard time with it in a university, that does not endorse nor prohibit anyone's religion. The Lutheran school has a religion course requirement, but a university should have no such requirement.

It is important to think about how you would have felt as a Jew praying in Jesus name, or the strictness of Islam, and praying to another god.

It's really inappropriate, and loving your neighbor as yourself (and not simply loving the self) is one of the main tenets of your religion.

But I'm still stuck on the importance. Is it important for Bush to sing Ave Maria, or lead the country? Is it important for you to make a sales report, or have your employer appear to endorse a religion (and what if it is Islam or Hindi next time)?

They can pray in public schools when priests teach algebra, and pray at my English School when a pastor is going to teach the difference between simple past and Present Perfect, and pray at staff meetings for GoldmanSachs when your minister trades municipal bonds during the service.

Our offices are closed on Christmas  and all other major holidays.

Is your office closed for Ramadan? Eide? Rosh Hashana? Passover?

Understand? It's only good for you, and no one else.
And that makes you happy?

How do you think the non-Christians feel about that?
Is it fair?

Would you like it if the government gave people Eide off, but you had to either work Christmas Eve and Day, or use vacation to celebrate them?

Are you able to think beyond love for yourself, and love your neighbor?

As well as being a Christian holiday, Christmas is also an American tradition. If I was in Iraq or some other country that didn't celebrate Christmas as a country, I wouldn't expect to be off. Same with Thanksgiving - I wouldn't expect to be off for it if I lived in Japan.

Same as my answer before - it's also an American thing so to speak to pray to God as opposed to something else. If I was in Iran, I wouldn't expect it or be offended when they prayed to whoever they, as a country, usually pray to.
