The water signifies the cleansing of your old body to a new body, free of sin. When your baptize, your baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Some people prefer to be sprinkled, some prefer to be submersed. Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we may be clean and purified.

"What can wash away my sin, nothing but the blood of Jesus"

Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-16

There are 4 views of Baptism:

1) The Sacramental view: Baptism is a means by which God conveys Grace. Roman Catholics and Lutheran have this view.

2) The covenantal view: Some view it as a sign and seal of God's covenant. This is because of what He has done and has promised.

3) The symbolical view: This view stresses the symbolic nature of the act by emphasizing baptism does not change the inward appearance, but is a token of our outward indication of an inner change already occurred in the believers life.

4) The dynamic view: Christians see elements of truth in other views but find their focus on the (dynamic) inherant in the Holy Spirits presence at baptism. Baptism is viewed as a severing of the bondage from sin.

1 Cor 10:2 and Col 2:11-15

I do believe baptism is a neccesary step in becoming saved. It is the identification of Christ in these steps.

There are initial steps that need to be taken before you come to that decision though: Like repentance...

Baptism is a 1 time good deal. That's why you need to carefully research and search your heart. Then repent and ask the Lord to forgive you of your sins, aknowledge that He is Lord and Savior, who died on a cross so that your sins may be forgiven.

My prayers are with you. I pray you'll become saved!

Quote: Do we need to go through water baptisms after being saved?

You need to go through a water baptism before your saved

It also symbolizes your decision to follow Christ.

In the Bible, everytime there is a crossing of a body of water, it is more than just a crossing of a body of water. It is a point of decision, a time when the people or person had to make a decision to trust God or to turn back.

At the Red Sea, the newly freed Hebrew slaves had to decide to trust God to part the water to allow them to leave Egypt, or to turn back and go home.

At the Jordan River, Joshua and the rest of the Israelites had to chose to step into the water and trust God would allow them to take ownership of the land, or to turn back and wander some more. Joshua even made a speech about it, "Choose this day whom you will serve...but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

At the Jordan, Jacob avoided crossing the river until that midnight wrestle with God, because he didn't know whether or not to trust what God had said by, "The elder will serve the younger." He didn't know whether or not God meant that and would be able to work out all the anamosity between Jacob and Esau. But eventually he got God to give him an assurance of the blessing, and he chose to trust and cross.

So water baptism is a point of decision, a place where you choose to make your new fatith a committment to trust God.

Whether or not you must have water baptism to be saved has been debated by smarter people than us, but I do think that refusing baptism is a sign that you are not ready to commit and submit to God.

Just had a thought , i think of water as symbolic as a realm of lifelessness. And it is only when one comes out of water that he is reborn to life.

Also, water baptism is necessary as an expression and proclaimation of your faith. It is necessary for salvation if you are still living and have the opportunity to do so. However, we must take note that some ppl who don't get baptised still get saved....remember the thief on the cross?

The water is symbolic of the Living Waters, The living waters being the Holy Spirit. That we should receive through Christ. And through Christ we receive eternal life. So you are right about it being symbolic of life

I do appreciate you listing the various views of Baptism. That eliminates argumenst about it. It is the way I said that denominations would be mentioned here. Only to state the varying views of a particular doctrine, rather than to put one forth as the only correct one.

Baptism also symbolizes death and rebirth. You go into the water as the old person, and that person symbolically dies and comes out the new person through your faith in Christ.

"Whoever is a believer in Christ is a new creation, the old person has passed away, and a whole new life is begun!"

Water baptism in that day (according to my Jewish Theologian book) was used to show cleanliness. Not neccessarily repentance, but that you are following after cleanliness.

But here's my view on it: What do you do in during baptism (submersion in this example)? You come down into the water, stay there a while, go under, come back up, stay just a little, then walk back up out of the water... right?

Well what did Jesus do? He came down into the earth (water), stayed a while, "went under" (death and burial), "came back up"(resurrection), stayed just a little (reappearances to disciples and others), then went back up where He was at first... lol

That's what I see when I look at a baptism...

I think to some extent I agree with all of these. I

think it is a sacrement, in the sense that it is a sacred act that is done exclusively for God's purposes. It's not something you do everyday as a part of ordinary life, it is something that is set aside for God.

I think it is an acknowledgement of God's covenant and a sealing of ourselves to Him, a way to show that we are committing and submitting to Him as our Master and Lord.

I think that it is symbolic, too, of our decision to follow and trust Him, ala the above mentioned Jordan River stuff.

And I think it is a breaking of the bondage of sin, too. I don't know why, but I am a different person since I got baptized two years ago than I was before, even though I was saved for 12 years before I got baptized. It really did break my bondage to sin!

Cool thanks heaps.

But there's one thing i still don't get. People keep telling me that you are saved accepting Christ. Now someone tells me that you have to be baptised to be saved. So does that mean that people who accept Christ are not saved just because they aren't or don't have a chance to get baptised?

It's a point of contention among Christian groups. But very few Christians think that someone who didn't get baptized before a sudden death is unsaved. Most agree that baptism is not a magic ritual which transforms an unsaved soul into a saved one.

But, to refuse to be baptized when it is available, that's a warning sign that you might not have really commited to Christ!

A river or lake would be a nice setting!

First repent in your heart, and prepare to be dead to your old self meaning you'll turn away from the sin that plagues your life. Accept that Jesus is the Son of the Living God, Believe that you are going to be born anew with the Holy Spirit!

You'll be asked these questions:

Do you believe that Jesus, the Son God came to earth in a human body to save you from your sins, Do you believe in the Trinity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit? Do you believe your sins will be washed away?

If you answer Yes to those, you will then be baptized (submersed) in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Risen to a new life! Salvation is yours!
