The founders of the Army wanted to move away from outward signs of inward grace, because an undue reliance was being placed on them. There was also the problem to be faced- adult or child? sprinkle or immerse? And given the early introduction of female ministry, could a lady do it?
I think the fact that Quakers had proved through their lives that baptism was by no means necessary to the holy life persuaded William Booth.
There is a super link to an Army website somewhere, I'm sure Andy will oblige.

The subject of Baptism is on the agenda in OBOB again at the moment.

I asked if, given that I have not been Baptised, nor have any desire to be, was I considered to be a Christian.

I thought you might be interested in one of the replies I got.

Ihave provided you with an honest answer. If you are saddened by it, I'm sorry, but I can't hold back the truth to ease someone's feelings, especially over an issue as important as salvation. Yes, any salvationist who is not baptized is in serious spiritual jeopardy, is not incorporated into the Body of Christ and is not baptized into the death of Jesus Christ, which enables us to rise with Him.

I should add that I also got other, far more 'Christain' answers.

that is bizarre however I do have friends in a church who believe the process of salvation is repentence, water baptism and then baptism of the holy spirit evidenced by speaking in tongues. This is all at once, like one step after the other in a day.
So I can't say I am surprised that you were told you aren't saved if you weren't baptized.
I went to a funeral when I was in high school, a friend had committed suicide, his funeral was in the Lutheran church and I had heard good things about the pastor.
The church was overflowing with youth and the pastor said "we know that Gord is in heaven today because he parents had him baptized here when he was a baby"
