the real question is -
can Jesus trust you to do the right thing?
what can you do to prove that you can be trusted?

That's not the "real question" with regards to God's promise of salvation, which is apart from the issue of works. "Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation. However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness. David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:" Rom 4:4-6

Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Catholics is that they may be saved. For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. Christ is the end of the law (even Canon Law) so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

Actually, I believe the production of the King James Version of the Bible, justifies Protestantism.
