PM's claim that only one civilian plane was intercepted over North America in decade before 9/11 is preposterous and illustrates how sloppy the article is with facts. While the military doesn't report intercepts, the AP reported the following statement from one of PM's own experts, Maj. Douglas Martin: "From Sept. 11 to June, NORAD scrambled jets or diverted combat air patrols 462 times, almost seven times as often as the 67 scrambles from September 2000 to June 2001, Martin said.

Actually, this illustrates perfectly just how sloppy (or possibly deceptive) the “Truth” sites are. Popular Mechanics did get the facts right, while your sites were either in such a hurry to try and debunk PM that they themselves slipped up, or they purposefully worded their response to strike down a straw man. Let's start with what PM actually said in the same article: “Prior to 9/11, all other NORAD interceptions were limited to offshore Air Defense Identification Zones (ADIZ). Until 9/11 there was no domestic ADIZ “. PM clearly admits that NORAD had led to interceptions other than Payne Steward’s in the decade prior to 9/11, but they had been limited to offshore intercepts.

Now let's look at the Douglas Martin quote. Here's the kicker; he doesn’t specify whether the 67 scrambles prior to 9/11 were domestic or offshore – he just says they were “scrambled”, but the “Research” site wants you to assume that the scrambles were “over North America”. Martin never says they were over North America. The truth of the matter can be verified in an article in Plane and Pilot magazine (http://www.planeandpilotmag.com/content/2005/oct/busting_tfr.html) that confirms “In the year previous to 9/11, NORAD intercepted airplanes in the ADIZ only 67 times, none of which occurred within the U.S. borders.” So of course Martin was correct in that there had been 67 scrambles between 2000-2001, but 9/11 "Research" misappropriates his words by framing their argument around the assumption that those scrambles had to be "over North America", which they weren't. Like the PM article said, "Until 9/11 there was no domestic ADIZ". 9/11"Research's" attempt at using PM's own expert against them fails miserably.

So the Popular Mechanics’ point concerning intercepts "over North America" was sound and based on solid research, while the 911”Research” rebuttal was either based on knee-jerk reactions or on intentional misinformation. I hope it was the former.

Regardless of this, it's a Red Herring, because the plane that was heading toward Washington was being watched by both Dulles Air Traffic Control and Cheney in the White House bunker, who had already given orders to the military (according to Mineta's testimony):

Dulles ATC:

"There was an unidentified plane to the southwest of Dulles moving at a very high rate of speed. I had literally a blip and nothing more" ... Traveling at 750 km/h the plane is heading straight for the protected airspace covering the Capitol and the White House..."And it was just a countdown..10 miles west, 9 miles west, and all of a sudden the plane turned away".

Regarding Mineta's testimony, the 9/11 Commission Report contradicted Mineta in saying that Cheney arrived at the White House 38 minutes after Mineta:

The hearings of May 22-23, 2003 were the second public hearings of the Commission and the first to focus on the actual events the day of 9/11. Secretary Mineta recounted to the Commission his experience on the morning of 9/11 from the time he was notified of the first plane hitting the World Trade Center, to his experience at the Presidential Emergency Operations Center (PEOC) along with Vice President Cheney and staff.

Unlike Secretary Rumsfeld who claimed to be "out of the loop", and General Myers who, astonishingly, was not disturbed from breakfast with Max Cleland, Mineta was able to provide a full account of his experience that morning. Mineta testified that he arrived at the PEOC at 9:20 a.m. and that Vice President Cheney was already present with his staff. "The 9/11 Commission Report" states that Cheney himself arrived at the PEOC at 9:58, a stunning 38 minute contradiction to Mineta's testimony.

Mineta's PEOC testimony was also edited out of the 9/11 Commission video archive.

When questioned about this, representatives at the National Archive stated that the video may have been lost because of a 'snafu'. Following is a brief summary of the scrubbed video along with links to recently obtained C-SPAN video.

There was good reason for the quizzical expression on Hamilton's face. Secretary Mineta had thoroughly trashed previous accounts of the PEOC activities that had been published in the press.

Mineta ultimately expressed the obvious, that the standing order was an open question only Cheney could answer. The fact that "The 9/11 Commission Final Report" discarded his testimony has never been explained.

If Mineta's testimony is to be taken into account, and there is no apparent reason why it should not be, questions about the timing of events the morning of 9/11 come into focus.

Most obvious is, if the standing order given by the Vice President prior to the aircraft hitting the Pentagon was not a shoot down order, then what was it?

Perhaps it was the danger of this question, and the danger that Cheney would have had to commit perjury to uphold the timeline reported in the mainstream press, that caused the Vice President to testify to the Commission along with the President in closed session, with no transcript, no witnesses, and no public accountability.

The resignation came just one day after Professor Jim Fetzer of Scholars for 9/11 Truth had appeared on Fox News' Hannity & Colmes, in which Fetzer suggested Mineta's 9/11 Commission testimony was proof of Cheney issuing a standdown order.
