I did my best to parse the verse (Matt 22:40) in question. Gave verses on how to fulfill the Law of Christ. Void of obedience to Mosaic ordnances. That no believer is under nor required to follow.

It's amazing (& frustrating) the grip the enemy has on so many true believers in Christ.

Acts 15:
1 And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.

5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

6 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.

(MY NOTE: After a heated debate & hearing from Peter & James the pillars of the Jerusalem assembly & the elders gathered.

23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia.
(MY NOTE: The Jerusalem assembly sends letters to the gentile churches)

24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:
(MY NOTE: You believers DON'T have to be circumcised OR keep the law of Moses)

28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;

29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

The Council at Jerusalem
Acts 15
1 And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.

2 When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.

3 And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.

4 And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them.

5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

6 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.

10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

12 Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.

13 And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me:

14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.

15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,

22 Then pleased it the apostles and elders with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas and Silas, chief men among the brethren:

23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia.

24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:

the old and the new covenant are the same. The only difference is where they are written.
Actually, they are not the same.

The Old Covenant was bilateral and conditioned on Israel's total consecration to remain in force.

The New Covenant is unilateral and an unconditional divine promise.

While I agree that the Mosaic and New Covenants have differences and should not be mixed, there are also some ways in which they are similar, such as both being made with the same eternal God with the same eternal nature and therefore the same eternal Torah for how to act in accordance with His nature.
The parties to covenants are not what make them similar.
What makes them similar are their terms (conditional, unconditional) and structure (unilateral, bilateral).

The Old Covenant and New Covenant have different terms and different structures.

Why is both covenants being made with the same God with the same nature and therefore the same instructions for how to act in accordance with His nature not a way in which they are similar? The Mosaic Covenant involved following the Torah and in Jeremiah 31:33, the New Covenant also involves following the Torah.

It was a simple yes or no question that you refused to answer, what kind of testimony is that?

Scripture says

Matthew 4:4
But he answering, said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

John 14:15
If ye love me, keep my commandments.

  1. John 14:21
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them: is he that loveth me: and he that loveth me, shall be loved of my Father: and I will love him, and will show mine own self to him.

  2. John 14:23
Jesus answered, and said unto him, If any man love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and will dwell with him.

  3. John 14:24
He that loveth me not, keepeth not my words, and the word which ye hear, is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

The Council at Jerusalem REVISTED - Galatians chapter 2

Gal 2:
I went up [to Jerusalem] because of a [divine] revelation, and I put before them the gospel which I preach among the Gentiles. But I did so in private before those of [a]reputation, for fear that I might be running or had run [the course of my ministry] in vain.
(MY NOTE: Thru divine revelation Paul is sent to Jerusalem. To meet with Peter, James, John & the Jerusalem assembly elders)

9 And recognizing the grace [that God had] bestowed on me, James and Cephas (Peter) and John, who were reputed to be pillars [of the Jerusalem church], gave to me and Barnabas the [c]right hand of fellowship, so that we could go to the Gentiles [with their blessing] and they to the circumcised (Jews).
(MY NOTE: James, Peter & John, on a handshake. Send Paul & Barnabas to the Gentiles [with their blessing] & they to the circumcised/Jews)

10 They asked only [one thing], that we remember the poor, the very thing I was also eager to do.

15 Paul say's “We are Jews by birth and not sinners from among the Gentiles;

16 yet we know that a man is not [e]justified [and placed in right standing with God] by works of the Law, but [only] through faith in [God’s beloved Son,] Christ Jesus. And even we [as Jews] have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the Law. By observing the Law no one will ever be justified [declared free of the guilt of sin and its penalty].

(MY NOTE: Man IS NOT JUSTIFIED/placed in right standing with God by works of the Law! By observing the Law NO ONE will ever be JUSTIFIED/declared free of the guilt of sin & its penalty. ONLY THRU FAITH/in God’s beloved Son, Christ Jesus. Even we, as Jews, have believed in Christ Jesus. So that We May Be JUSTIFIED By FAITH in Christ)

17 But if, while we seek to be justified in Christ [by faith], we ourselves are found to be sinners, does that make Christ an advocate or promoter of our sin? Certainly not!
(MY NOTE: This verse is a jab at the sin Paul Publicly called Peter out for in verses Gal 2:11-14) Peter, a believing pillar of the faith's cowardly sin doesn't make Christ (Who will forgive Peter again) an advocate or promoter of our sin)

18 For if I [or anyone else should] rebuild [through word or by practice] what I once tore down [the belief that observing the Law is essential for salvation], I prove myself to be a transgressor.
(MY NOTE: ANYBODY! that promotes, the belief that observing the Law is essential for salvation. Is himself a transgressor!)

19 For through the Law I died to the Law and its demands on me [because salvation is provided through the death and resurrection of Christ], so that I might [from now on] live to God.
(MY NOTE: The only path to salvation is Belief/FAITH in the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus!) AMEN & Amen...

  3. A contract.
You might try the Biblical usages:

Old Covenant - a conditional divine pledge to be Israel's God, the condition: Israel's total consecration to the Lord as his people who live by his rule and serve his purpose (Deuteronomy 7:12, Deuteronomy 26:17; 2 Kings 21:8).

New Covenant - an unconditional divine promise to unfaithful Israel for forgive her sins and establish his relationship with her on a new basis by writing his law on their hearts (internal law rather than external law; fulfilled in loving, Romans 13:8-10), a covenant of grace entered by faith, not by descent from Isaac (Jeremiah 31:31-34).

You did not answer the question I asked.
Actually I did.
1.Redemption from Egypt, from the fathers...

De 7:8 But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

2. Yet....In all their sin and punishment....
Lev 26:44 And yet for all that, when they be in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my covenant with them: for I am the LORD their God.
45 But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the heathen, that I might be their God: I am the LORD.

Joh 7:22 Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.
Ro 11:28 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes.
Ro 15:8 Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:
15 Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations;
16 Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac;
17 And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant,
18 Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance;

Mosaic covenant was not made with Abe, Isaac, and Jacob see Deut. 5:2-3

24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:

(MY NOTE: Here are the rules the apostles & elders gave to the gentile churches.)

Did the Jerusalem Council have the authority to countermand God? In other words, when God has commanded His people to do something and your interpretation of Acts 15 is correct that the Jerusalem Council ruled that Gentiles don't have to obey what God has commanded, then who has the higher authority, and which one should be followed?

31 Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation
(MY NOTE: The people read the letter & REJOICED! Rejoice you/we don't have to be circumcised OR keep the law of Moses to be saved!)
Bible Gateway passage: Acts 15 - King James Version

The Psalms express an extremely positive view of the Mosaic Law, such as with David repeatedly saying that he loved it and delighted in obeying it, so if we consider the Psalms to be Scripture and to therefore express a correct view of the Mosaic Law, then we will share it, as Paul did (Romans 7:22), while rejoicing that you don't get to have the delight of obeying it is incompatible with the view that the Psalms are Scripture. For example, according to Psalms 1:1-2, blessed are those who delight in the law of the Lord and who meditate on it day and night, so we can't believe in the truth of these words as Scripture while not allowing them to shape our view of the Mosaic Law. Furthermore, the NT authors considered the Psalms to be Scripture, so they should not be interpreted as expressing a view of the Mosaic Law that is incompatible with the view that the Psalms are Scripture.

You remain unable to negate that Jeremiah 31:33 says that the New Covenant involves God putting the Torah in our minds and writing it on our hearts.

While Paul denied in Romans 4:4-5 that we can earn our justification as a wage by obeying God's law, he also said in Romans 2:13 that only doers of the law will be justified, so there is a reason that our justification requires us to choose to be doers of the law other than in order to earn it, such as faith insofar as Romans 3:31 says that our faith does not abolish God's, but rather our faith upholds it. Christ spent his ministry teaching his followers how to obey God's law by word and by example, so you should not interpret Galatians as Paul speaking against following Christ as if he were not a servant of God.

In Acts 5:32, the Spirit has been given to those who obey God, so obedience to God is part of the way to receive the Spirit, however, Galatians 3:1-2 denies that works of the law are part of the way to receive the Spirit, so the phrase "works of the law" does not refer to anything that God has commanded, and the problem is that you are taking what was only said against works of the law and applying it as through it were said against the Law of God, as if Paul were an enemy of God. In Acts 10:28, Peter referred to a law that forbade Jews to visit or associate with Gentiles, which is not law commanded by God anywhere in the Bible. In Galatians 2:11-16, it was this law that Peter was obeying when he stopped visiting or associating with Gentiles, and by doing so, he was giving credibility to those who were wanting to require Gentiles to obey their works of the law in order to become justified, which is why Paul rebuked him and reiterated that we are justified by faith, not by works of the law. In Matthew 23:23, Christ said that faith is one of the weightier matters of God's law, so obedience to it is the way to have faith in him, so ironically in the name of speaking in favor of being justified by faith in Christ, you are arguing against having faith in Christ.
