Vulgar language, is it a sin?

Yep.

Ephesians 4:29 (King James Version)
29Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Romans 12:14 (King James Version)
14Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.

Titus 2:7-8 (King James Version)
7In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
8Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

James 3:10 (King James Version)
10Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Colossians 3:8 (King James Version)
8But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

You seem to be taking the word 'curse' way out of context here. According to my dictionary a curse in this context is 'a solemn utterance intended to invoke a supernatural power to inflict harm or punishment on someone or something'; using vulgar language is not intended to 'invoke a supernatural power'.

However, with Titus 2:7-8 I would have to agree that it is referring to obscene talk, 'sound speech that cannot be condemned', when you cuss you're just setting yourself up to be looked down upon.

Now with Ephesians 4:9 I would not say that the author was not referring to cussing when he said 'corrupt communication' because of how that it just isn't logical to take any random word and claim it is corrupt. Can you deem certain words inappropriate to use? Yes. Corrupt/immoral? No. It's about how and when you use those words and your motives behind their usage.

My writing right now is terrible, but it's 3:30 in the morning.

:/

Anyways...have at it.

Such language is at least uncivil. It starts as an attempt to establish dominance by shocking and offending, but usually degenerates into mere meaningless noise.

As an aside, I find it is somewhat amusing that saying the "N-word" will get you thrown of the bus, but you can say m---f--- all you like. Maybe m---f---'s need a better lobby.

Remember the bible was written a few years ago and your definition of curse is fairly recent and if you want a real answer you could even read the bible for yourself and gain a real understanding for yourself
Most questions will be answered direct from the bible and you wont need an intrepereter to explain it to you

There's nothing wrong with it really. A few choice expletives can liven up a story, or if I'm playing football and I miscontrol a pass, a passionate "**** the ****ing ****er" makes me feel a lot better. I also tend to say "[bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]" a lot, but that's not really an expletive like its near-homonym. You'd say "[bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] off" in front of your grandmother, but you wouldn't "[bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] your wife". It's not like I'm constantly swearing my head off.

I'm unsure about it and, to be honest, don't care simply because using vulgar language is, most of the time, useless, annoying, and makes you seem low class.

Anyways, I want to see a good argument/debate...

Go...

I say to my boys that when people swear too much it shows they haven't had much of an education if they're the only words they are able to use.
Anyway what's the point of swearing? There is no shock value to those words any more.

Maybe there should be a new rule-of-thumb:

No of 4 letter words is indirectly proportional to IQ points. i.e. higher the amount of "swear words", lower the IQ.

I have undergraduate degrees in mathematics and engineering, and I've just submitted a masters dissertation in sustainable energy. I've plenty of education, and I'd like to think I've got a relatively high IQ. There's nothing inherently wrong with swearing, if the circumstances are right. I don't swear when I'm working with children, or indeed, when I'm around them at all.

Sometimes, it is appropriate to swear to add emphasis to something. It's a useful linguistic tool, as well as a convenient pressure valve.

Thank you. I'll take that as a compliment.

Seeing as the English language hadn't even begun to develop in Biblical times, I fail to see how using English expletives is in any way relevant to the Bible.

I don't see anything wrong with swearing, it doesn't hurt anyone, and it can often be used for comedic effect.

Obviously, though, I know alot of people have a problem with profanity, and so, in public, I try not to swear, particularly around children.

Just like ayersy stated above

"Obviously, though, I know alot of people have a problem with profanity, and so, in public, I try not to swear, particularly around children."

Its not really a great deal to ask or expect is it
I have noticed most people today dont respect themselves so there is no chance they would respect others

You dont suprise me R Cosc I would expect no less

I already said I don't swear around children, and if someone states to me that they're offended by certain words, or if I have any other reason to believe they will be, I won't use them. How is that not respectful?

I will use expletives in conversation with my friends and peers, or in other situations where it is not inappropriate, such as playing football, or if I stub my toe

Ephesians 4:29
29Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
matthew 15:10-20
10Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand. 11What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean.' "
12Then the disciples came to him and asked, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?"
13He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14Leave them; they are blind guides.[a] If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit."
15Peter said, "Explain the parable to us."
16"Are you still so dull?" Jesus asked them. 17"Don't you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' 19For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20These are what make a man 'unclean'; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him 'unclean.' "
Yes, it's sin.

Nah, spoken like a true Irishman:p

Irish people only swear when it is necessary. However since we are very passionate people every occasion seems to be necessary.

"Mary, this toast is f$%^%"£' delicious? Is this our regular butter?"

"What!? I can't f££%%£' believe it's not butter!"

...etc
