Village People would 'seriously consider' playing YMCA for Trump, lead singer says

It was adopted as a gay anthem for sure. But like all songs, I suppose fans can take it anyway you choose. Not much one can do about that.
Yes, makes me think of 'Ave Maria'.

Many Catholics love that song. It is a beautiful song about Mary. Almost always brings tears to my eyes. Because the song is so beautiful, there are even many non-Catholics who love listening to it, especially during the Christmas season, even though emphasis on Mary is not a big part of their faith life.

Good music is like that ... it speaks to the heart (and sometimes the feet, too! lol).

I was doing the disco scene back in the 70's. I didn't go to gay bars, because I'm not gay. But they played YMCA in the bars where I did go to dance. And when it came on, we didn't all say, "Oh, there's that song written for the gay people!" lol

To this day, when I hear the song I don't think of the gay culture. I think of a very fun time in American society when we loved dancing to great music. If the gay culture took it on and enjoyed it in their clubs, I wouldn't know. (Maybe you do, if you were part of that culture.) But in the 70's, the song was played widely most everywhere ... and persons of all persuasions were dancing to it. And that IS something that Donald Trump would know.
I hated Disco, so I didn't go to the places that played Disco. But, I was fully aware of what the Village People were and what their songs meant. To each his own, was my way of looking at it.

Trump would have known as well but he probably didn't care either. He just loved the party life. He wasn't religious or political back then.

Well, certain gays have adopted the idea of their being an ethnic group or something like that, even though they are not of one race, like blacks are. And Donald adopted the Y song, whether he is like to the singers or not. People adopt things.

I'm going to say something controversial, whatever else people take it to mean, the song has a Christian theme, it is about the Young Men's Christian Association, it is about "cleaning" your life up, getting help to get started, not despairing.

The Y is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Well, that was part of the meaning according to Willis. The co writer was gay, the producer was gay, most of the Village People were gay, and the album was about gay life.

I wonder if the YMCA still has Christian values, not in name, but in practice.

Thanks for the info.

So? Who cares who someone is attracted to? It’s irrelevant.

Don’t understand why those in the LGBT so called “community” have to make everything about their sex life.

It’s creepy.

I don't care. I have family members that are gay and I love them just as much as I love everyone else.

You should love them by helping them live a celibate life and not a life of sin.

I have a brother deep in that lifestyle.

He habitually cheats on his “boyfriend”

Filthiest lifestyle there is.

I don't preach down to people. I tell them about the forgiveness and love that they find in a spiritual life with Jesus. If I can help nurture a relationship with God, God can take care of the sin.

Do you try to get divorcees to live a celebrate life? Most are living a sinful life if they start dating or remarry.

I tell them they can only get forgiveness from Jesus IF THEY REPENT. They cannot continue to live a life of sin. That’s not how forgiveness works.

And yes, many divorced people are called to celibacy.

Nice try, though.

It sounds like The Village People care more about their music than making political statements. Whoever embraces YMCA as an anthem is less important than spreading the positivity. Gay and straight people alike can enjoy the song. We are living in politically polarized times, but I wouldn't take this as an endorsement of the GOP. If the fact that Trump also likes it and gets others listening to it this is a win for the band.

Not all gays engage in sexual sin. Some are celebate.
