According to what I've learned religion governs or influences everything most Africans do. It is very important to them. Sadly it doesn't influence cultural behaviors that are dangerously out of date. Diseases spread by this unsanitary habit is a very serious problem there.

There is no middle ground SINCE RELIGION HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!!! It's purely an economic issue. If these people had the money to get toilets and their national governments had the money to install large enough systems of plumbing, then the issue would be fixed.

Toilets and latrines have been tried. They won't use them. Based on the terrible consequences this becomes a moral, thus religious, issue. That's where the evidence leads me. This onion has to be peeled back further. There are some fundamental problems here that go directly to their religions.
