  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Video Card Reccomendations

I have $180-200 to play with and my video card needs replacing in a very major way.

Problem is that I dont really know hardware, my area is usually game software.

I have an NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT right now and its choking on the newer games I play.

What would be a good card to look into?

I've been looking at the eVGA e-GeForce 8800 GT 512MB Superclocked but again, I dont really know hardware.

The 8800 gt is the best bang for the buck. It out performs the 8800gts 640. If you can afford the super clock model, more power to you. But you will only gain a few fps over the normal 8800 gt.

The 8800 gt will still "choke" on crysis, but you should get 40-70 fps with cod4 maxed out. I am very happy with my evga card btw. Life time warranty is great! Also when you regester it, you can get cross shipping and evga pays for the shipping, for a minimal fee.

But where in the world are you finding this card for under $200???
But reguardlaess, i wouldnt buy a card other than the 8800 gt. You may save $50 but youll get half the performence.

I also highly recommend the 8800GT. I just got this XFX GeForce 8800GT, incredibly good performance. I upgraded from a 7800GT, which was certainly a decent card, but the 8800GT positively blows it away, especially on newer shader-intensive games. Stock cooler, even though it is single slot with a small fan, does a decent job, and is VERY quiet on the default 29% speed. So far,so good.

With the g92, I can still play crysis ok on high (probably because of the rest of my system). I got it after selling my other two cards to make way for the g98s that will be coming soon. That should kill everything else out there right now. It should also drop prices down for the g80s, except the g92.

The g98s would go nice with triple Sli, but im not sure if i could handle that much power.

Yes, i can play crysis with everthing on high, no aa etc with 25fps using an 8800 gts 320. But i hardly consider 25fps playable. and the gtx was only getting 32-35 fps :( But at least 30fps is playable.but it will still drop to 22 and rise to 42 at times.

so if the 8800gt plays at 29-30fps.. it is still "choking".Thats what i ment.

BTW steezie.. can you give us an update on whats going on? Too many people post questions and never update anyone to the situation. :)

Well I know my cardslot is AGP and Im going to wait and see if the new memory fixes my problem.

I've been having a problem where my computer will only recognize one of my 512 sticks of RAM at a time. I got it checked and it turns out BOTH of them were bad so Im getting them replaced with two 1 gig sticks. The problem before was EVERYTHING was running slow and Im going to wait and see what problems this new memory fixes and if its sufficent then Im probably going to get an advance copy of Spore instead :D

Oh! Don't get that Geforce 8800 GT then. That only comes in PCI-Express. The best graphics card I've seen for AGP is the ATI HD 2600 XT. You won't be playing Crysis very well on it, but it should be a major improvement.
