  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Matthew 7:1-4
"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to to the plank in your own eye?

How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?

Because they won't be. Like Kirk said, it is a place for us to regroup. Day after day, I'm assaulted by anti-Catholic rhetoric out the whazoo! Somehow, it is okay for Bible-beating Protestants to cram their opinions down my throat, and I'm supposed to turn the other cheek? Heck, I've even turned my lower cheeks, day after day! We just need to regroup. We're human, we have feelings and frustrations too. We sin, just like everyone else. According to some people, we sin even more - to the point we're damned to Hell!

If you went to a Catholic church, looking for some answers, I can guarantee you that you'd most likely find a loving atmosphere where someone would answer your questions without making you feel like you were inferior. However, if you take a defensive attitude with them, they will likely get defensive back. It's the nature of the beast. All I can say is this: it seems as though we're expected to take a lot of anti-Catholic sentiments and still act like nothing's wrong. Why can't we come here to vent about it?

*sigh* Anyway....

May the Peace of Christ be with you always,
Amy

First, because you are in a public place. You're venting in front of millions of people.

It's not like venting to a close friend in a private place.

Secondly, because I didn't see a statute of limitations on turning the other cheek.

Thirdly, because it's what the anti-Catholics do. Just because they do it doesn't mean that it's right for your to do it back.

Look, I can sympathize with your frustration. I just read a "non-partisan" history of propaganda which slammed the Catholic church throughout. I wouldn't have been able to pick out his bias if I hadn't been hanging out on these boards.

On the other hand, I still wonder, why would I want to assimilate to a church culture exemplifying the hatred and stereotyping for which I left my former church? Why would I want to hear people ridiculing my ancestors and my tradition, even mis-representing them, same people who protest such ridicule and mis-representation of theirs?

I am sorry that I spoke. Obviously I am defensive here.

I am tired of church. I've seen hatred and idiocy on all the boards I have visited and in every church I've attended, Baptist, Anglican, Catholic. I'll keep worshipping God, thank you very much, but the people make me depressed.

If Jesus were indeed who he says he was, and if he were in character, I believe that he would read this thread and weep.

But that's just my opinion, of course.

You're exactly right. Playground rules here, really. I try not to do it myself, although it is really hard to keep my big mouth shut sometimes. I'm sorry if I have bashed anything personally.

Great! I'm glad you learned something. I think it is worthwhile to learn all you can about a topic so that you can understand people's biases (both positive and negative) toward a subject.

I can understand where you are coming from, really. I'm really tired of all the "slamming" all groups get, really. I left my parents church because of the hypocrisy and bigotry toward any but their own narrow belief system. I don't know if I realized that as human, we all tend to be that way, so you'll get that with any organized religion, or if it isn't really as bad in the Catholic church (I'm suspecting the first one is true). Anyway, I am comfortable in my place in the Catholic church. I have not heard any priests "bash" my parents belief system or others similar. In fact, the pastor of our current church is very gentle when he points out the error (according to Catholic theology) of my parents' belief system. He accepts that this is how they believe, but also explains why the Church teaches other than that. You would probably like him as he tries to be as gentle as possible. He will not hesitate to tell you that he thinks other groups are wrong, but at least he does it in a kind and Christian fashion. This man really is a good example. I'd drive an hour just to go to his church, if I had to. I wish you luck in your search for answers. It's hard to get through the people to see the beauty of a faith sometimes. It's kinda like humanity is a layer of dust on the gilt mirror of the Church - you gotta get through that to see how gorgeous it really is.

Peace,
Amy
