The Catholic faith teaches that Mary is a human, not a goddess. A lot of Fundamentalists like to use a straw man argument to try to mislead people into thinking that the Catholic Church teaches that Mary is to be worshipped like some kind of goddess.

"A straw man argument is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position. To "set up a straw man" or "set up a straw-man argument" is to create a position that is easy to refute, then attribute that position to the opponent. A straw-man argument can be a successful rhetorical technique (that is, it may succeed in persuading people) but it is in fact a misleading fallacy, because the opponent's actual argument has not been refuted." - Wikipedia

Attacking the Catholic Church with propaganda to try to demonize the Church goes back to Martin Luther who was the first to break from the Catholic Church to try to found his own church. The only way that he could try to justify leaving the Church was to try to demonize it.

So the Protestant Reformers used the newly invented printing press to help them spread anti-Catholic propaganda on a massive scale. And in the process, the Protestant Reformers perfected the technique of spreading twisted history, exaggerations and flat out lies about the Church in order to get people to leave the Catholic Church and join the new Protestant movement.

Here is what we Catholics profess at Mass as a summary of the Catholic faith.

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
one in Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
(all bow their heads during the next three lines)
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he was born of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.

For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered, died, and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in fulfillment of the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son
he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic
and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The most effective "anti-Catholic propaganda" was The Bible.

Let it be noted that he edited the very canons of the Bible. Nice!

Five bucks a pop, right here!

Oh, and that's a strawman... Orthodoxy holds many of the same beliefs concerning the Theotokos as Catholicism, and we certainly will have nothing to do with indulgences. Try again.

Same with us Anglicans. And for both our churches, like the Vatican Catholics, we hold to the doctrine of the Communion of Saints, which is not just the Theotokos but all the Church-recognized persons.

Edit the Bible, or set up a Mgesterium to redefine it... I don't see much difference, but I agree if your point is that no matter how respectable his soteriology was, he goofed when he placed the NT books out of chronological order. I guess he wasn't infallible either.

No one is individually infallible save for Christ Himself. Unfortunately I must part ways with many Catholics on that one as well. :sorry:
