So I've been watching friends plan weddings, and I wonder why people bother with such grotesquely elaborate ceremonies. I've heard the average ceremony costs $30,000 (one couple I know is trying to keep it to "just" $6,000 — a princely sum nonetheless). Thirty grand could buy me a new Mustang GT or Subaru WRX STI. And it's just one afternoon! So you spend thousands you don't have to throw a party for people you can barely stand to celebrate a marriage that has a 50 percent chance of failure.

Screw that; I'm going to Vegas. I'll find an Elvis impersonator to officiate the ceremony, like these folks:

We were married by a Justice of the Peace but had a wedding a month later "for the family". Lemme just say that it was NOT worth it... and if I could do it over again, I'd have taken all that money and gone on a cruise
