I'm curious to know if there is any correlation between ones religious beliefs and ones thoughts of vaccine efficacy / safety. I would therefore be most interested to see everybody's responses to this questions.

1. What is your religious position
2. Have you / would you give your child a full childhood vaccination panel.

I'm gonna guess that there is such a correlation, especially among fundamentalists.

Obviously... I think it's even required by law to do so. I'm not actually sure, because I'm not aware of anyone over here crazy enough not to vaccinate their children.
But I'm pretty sure that certain vaccinations are required by law.

I can't imagine that there IS any correlation, barring the obvious--Christian Science and perhaps a few non-traditional faiths like the Jehovah's Witnesses or Old Order Amish.

I think it's only in one direction.

I think the majority of theists will accept that vaccination is a good idea, like most other 21st century people.
However, I expect to find that those few who are against vaccination, will statistically be more likely to be fundamentalists.
In other words, I'ld expect that religiosity in that group will be through the roof.

You're hoping your preconceived idea will be confirmed, in other words. But how are you going to identify anyone as a "fundamentalist?"

I didn't say "hope". I said that I "expected" that to be the outcome.

But how are you going to identify anyone as a "fundamentalist?"

fundamentalism
/ˌfʌndəˈmɛntəˌlɪzəm/
noun
1.
(Christianity) the belief that every word of the Bible is divinely inspired and therefore true
2.
(Islam) a movement favouring strict observance of the teachings of the Koran and Islamic law
3.
strict adherence to the fundamental principles of any set of beliefs

I'd actually expect the opposite given that antivax tends to be more of an issue in traditionally liberal states, which tend to be less ideologically christian.

I was thinking something similar. I always stereotype anti-vaxxers as being new age hippy types!

On the other hand, I expect there is a correlation between fundies and mistrust of science. Though I suspect that most fundies only have a problem with the aspects of science which disagree with their religious beliefs, and not really with science in general.

I would be interested to see results of any studies on this.

You mean I can't publish on this?! Aw dash it.
Nah, just trying to see what people think.

In that case, we're now 17 posts into this thread and there has not been a single fundamentalist say he's opposed to vaccines. In fact, we don't have a single poster of any religious persuasion say that he is.

Right. I forgot about the "it needs to be bio!" tree-hugger-hipster who carries an iwatch, iphone, ipad and macbook around all day.... :)

Indeed, that was my reasoning. Hence, even with the bio-hipsters, I'ld still expect to see a significant share for fundies among those anti-vaxxer.

Have we now reduced expectations to "a significant share" (since nothing on this forum/survey is proving out the idea that they're "more likely" than other people or that there is a "correlation")?
