  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Its not our place to tell people what they need. Different people have different needs. And as has been said before, marriage doesn't guarantee anything. Just look at divorce statistics, infidelity statistics, and unhappy marriage statistics. There are no guarantees in life.

what are the divorce rates for Christian couples practicing NFP rather than contraception

You have been told before that:

1- Divorce, with no kids involved, is perfectly fine, much better than two people who don't love each other staying together anyway.

2- NFP is less effective than contraception. Therefore it leads to more kids. Therefore it leads to more parents "staying together for the kids", quite possibly very unhappy with the situation.

Marriages can be annulled, partners cheated on. A ring on the finger doesn't have magic properties that make a married couple unable to break their committment.

And besides, it's stupid to think that two people in their twenties should be shackled to each other until they die. What if they change as people, have fights, or fall out of love?

^_^ Whoah honey we had a fight time to bust out the divorce papers! Till death do us part or when you want me to rake the leaves!

And finally, why should sex mean "total committment" any more than cooking someone a meal, or playing a round of golf with them should? So long as both parties know what they're getting into, what harm is there in having sex with someone whose adult nappy you don't plan on changing 60 years into the future?

^_^

Tell me, would you play a game of golf with your mother?

I said "fights", not "a fight". If a couple are constantly throwing plates and roaring their heads off at each other, it's probably not a happy marriage.

Yes, I do, regularly. She's quite good. Is there a point to this?

In fact, friends rarely decide to stop seeing each other because "things aren't working out", or because they're "not each other's type".
It happens all the time.

Good point, reading back over my post, that's not what I'd meant to say at all. I was trying to get at the fact that being married is no guarantee that someone will love you forever. And neither is refraining from having sex.

what is the correlation between this sort of attitude of non-committment/divorce and depression?

it sounds like we agree that NFP decreases the divorce rate. (the Lerner survey found a .2% divorce rate)

I don't know. What is the correlation between being trapped in a loveless marriage by a child and depression?

I don't know

do you mean loveless of lustless?

(I am not meaning to depreciate in any way the vast importance of sex, sexual desire, or related in marriage)

I meant loveless.

My point was that if a couple use contraception don't have kids, then fall out of love, they're free to divorce and move on, no harm done.

If a couple forego contraception, do have kids, then fall out of love, they're left either raising a kid in two broken homes, or else being trapped with somebody they no longer love on account of the child. Neither of them is ideal, for anybody concerned.

The rhythm method is one of the least effective means of avoiding pregnancy.

Besides, it hasn't been "suddenly" unless you mean 50 years ago when safe and reliable birth control became widely available to women (in most states - it was illegal for a while in some).

Are you really condemning marital sex for pleasure and intimacy? Even the Catholic Church gave in on that point.

the CatholicChurch did not "give in" - it has always been the Church's position that sex is for procreation AND intimacy. this shows your ignorance of history of the Church but i am not suprised... most non CAtholics and even many catholics are uninformed about that

for another thing, artif contraception is NOT safe... condoms are defective from the factory... have microscopic holes in them... and sometimes they break.

all the other methods that i can think of cause early abortion

The Church speaks for God - and condemns artif b control...

too bad few listen... even those inside the Church:doh:

I see. You are worried that in the absence of contraception marriage may become a grave matter?

You're the one saying that marriage is so weak it needs unwanted children to keep it together.

The whole religious idea of marriage is completely set up for failure today. Back when the wife was property, it worked out alright. You didn't want a used wife, so you could be sure any kids she had were your own, they tended to be expensive with the dowry, and the familial ties it created matter more than anyone's happiness.

Nowadays, people expect you to not ever live with your fiance before hand (making it impossible to really get to know them, and to know if you can really stand living with them for the rest of your life) not to know if you're sexually compatible, and on top of that, make it where you can't split apart once you discover those incompatibilities, and to further complicate things, take away contraception to ensure that even if you can't stand each other, you need to stay together so the kids don't suffer.

It's pretty ludicrous.
