Hello,
I have a question about using God's name in vain. People often use it in daily speech such as "Oh my God.." and stuff like that. I belive that commandment about using His name in vain has deeper meaning but my question is since i don't belive it's okay to use His name like that, is it okay to read books where writers use His name like that. I have to read some books for school and almost EVERY BOOK has it. What would you do?

I don't think that reading someone else's choice of words makes you guilty of the prohibition you're asking about. In theory, it might do so if this tempted you to imitate that kind of speech yourself, but that seems very unlikely.

Vain means " producing no result and useless". "Oh my God"does not sound like it fits this description. I belive using God's name in vain is anytime our heart does not match His will.
Blessings

The third commandment is part of the marriage vows between Christ (God) and the Church. A woman (in the Christian West) takes her husband's name upon marriage. This is the fundamental meaning of the commandment.

What would you do?

If the reading is at home, then try not to read those words, certainly don't imitate them.

If the reading is in public, read what is in front of you.

In the bible, names often tell us something about the person who has a particular name. Is not the same true about the names by which we know God. If God is holy, then so is His name. To treat Him, His name without proper respect is not to recocognise and properly respect Him for who He is!

I believe in keeping the 3rd commandment (like we should with all of God’s commandments) and I think using phrases like "Oh my XXX" are using God's name in vain. Most people who use that phase use it with a negative connotation or nothing to do with respecting our Saviors precious name. I think you become what you surround yourself with. I pretty much stopped watching all secular TV, because even PG movies uses the Lord's name in vain constantly. We should only use God's name in the upmost holy respect.

The fact this bothers you means the Holy Spirit is speaking to you. If under 18 I would ask your parents if they can move you to a Christian private school where they value our Creator's name. If that is not possible and you are forced to read books that take God's name in vain, pray about it and maybe talk to your teacher about it and let them know that these books bother you to see if there are any alternate books.

God bless!

You can always pray for the writer of the book when you see those things.

***I wouldn't worry about it, it's part of life even to say bad words, and I say them often I'll admit, maybe not in front of you or anybody. God is loving and forgiving and graceful and I can forgive myself too. But when I'm riding my motorcycle and you cut me off you can't hear the steam under my motorcycle helmet, only God does. And if you decide to become an actor one day, you will have to act like the world to win an Oscar. God understands how life is, don't torment yourself with trivial things. God is only concerned with your heart staying pure, every other part of you may get stained, but your heart shines through your being. DL
