Actually, we had open borders until the late 1800s. Again, ignorance of history on your part, is not an excuse.
Technically speaking, we only had open borders until 1808, when the importation of slaves was banned (the federal government was constitutionally forbidden from banning or restricting it until that year: "The Migration or Importation of such Persons as any of the States now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year one thousand eight hundred and eight").

However, if we don't count the slave trade as immigration, or we're only talking about voluntary immigration (people trying to get to the US rather than being forced), then open borders did continue until the 1875 Page Act.

That was an embargo for commerce. There weren't immigration laws until much later.

Voluntary immigration, as opposed to human trafficking, remained open much later.

Wow, I would think we could go a few pages before derails start! I will quote the OP below. The topic is about military funding for Ukraine and Israel. It is not immigration to the US, or the European Parliment, or the Epcot Center.

The OP:

Ukraine aid from US in doubt after briefing walk-out, failed Senate vote

The $110bn (£87.3bn) package included $61bn for Ukraine, as well as funds for Israel and aid for Gaza. The package [also] includes provisions for border security, but Republican demands for additional changes to asylum rules has complicated negotiations with Democrats.

Concerns over the future of the $110bn package grew on Tuesday after a classified briefing for lawmakers aimed at shoring up support for new funds broke down spectacularly. Senators shouted at each other over border security and at least a dozen Republicans walked out.

A Ukrainian official said that failure to secure more US aid would mean a "very high possibility" that the war will be lost to Russia.

Republicans are insisting that any aid to Ukraine be tied to sweeping US immigration and asylum reforms.

Earlier on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden said he was "willing to make significant compromises on the border" in order to get the aid bill passed.

[In addition to all GOP Senators, Bernie Sanders voted against the package due to the lack of conditions on the military aid provided to Israel.]

"What the Netanyahu government is doing is immoral, it is in violation of international law, and the United States should not be complicit in those actions."

Don't make me do a clean up.

Three Senators continue to work on a deal.....

Republicans’ top negotiator on a potential border and immigration deal that could unlock tens of billions in aid for Ukraine said on Sunday that lawmakers could release the text of an agreement as soon as this week.

Sen. James Lankford’s (R-Okla.) optimistic remarks are the latest sign that his discussions with Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) could bear fruit after several days of urgent talks in Washington last week and months of behind-the-scenes discussions. The trio and the Biden administration are honing in on an agreement that could raise the standard for claiming asylum and potentially deliver new expulsion and enforcement authorities to the administration. It would also provide significant new resources for border adjudication and staffing.

I wonder what it must be like to be a dedicated “public-servant” and toil at a “deal” that isn’t going to pass in the Fredo House.
