So I decided to get rid of some secular books, one of them being one in the Harry Potter series. That same day I was going to help my church distribute some food, and I thought of donating it to the homeless outreach.

I then gave it to the pastor's son, he said he'd find someone that liked it, and looked at me weird. I feel bad because it deals with witchcraft and stuff like that.

Did I pass evil around? Will God punish me for passing cursed stuff between brothers?

Sincerely worried.

Already asked for forgiveness, hopefully he wont chastise me :/

While there are certainly better things out there to read than Harry Potter, I don't think the books are "evil." God won't be angry at you for passing Harry Potter around.

You made a mistake but I don't think God will punish you. The only thing is that in a way you gave a book that puts the power of witchcraft before the power of God, which is a way of idolatry, so maybe you should ask God's forgiveness just to be sure.

This is always an interesting one, and oddly enough, a guy was talking to me about it in my computing class today.

Personally, i read a lot, and i think that reading the harry potter series is ok. The fact that it is complete fiction, without a hint of truth is the bit that ratchets it up into the acceptable category for me. Now, if it had truth in it, ie something that was messing with spirits, demons, etc, then it wouldnt be acceptable for me personally.

My idea would be that as long as it's not something to do with demons or anything like that outside of fiction, that its ok (i think i repeated here). If the pastor feel's strongly about them, he can dispose of them, or if you really feel bad, you might be able to contact the pastor and have the books disposed of.

And honestly, i dont think God will be angry with you. He loves ya, remember?

Anways, thats my two cents.

Nothing wrong with it at all, especially since it's fiction. I play plenty of "secular" video games (Doom, etc.), listen to plenty of "secular" music (Marilyn Manson, etc.) and what not. I don't play these video games and listen to this music only because they have "cursed" stuff in them, but because they are quality media (they are quality because they are quality, not because they are secular).

Now, if you were reading a book that sucked real bad, but it had secular stuff in it, and you read and enjoyed it because of the secular stuff, that would be a different story. :p

If Harry Potter got anything to do with witchcraft, then also books and movies like Narnia and Lord of the Rings got something to do with it.

I used to be a member of a organization for Nordic pagans, and I were into lots of things that would be called witchcraft. And there is no connection with that, and the books mentioned above. There is a big difference between rituals like drawing a circle, and reading a fiction book about wands and brooms. If the Harry Potter books would talk about the true meaning behind wands and brooms, then I would be saying that it is about witchcraft.

So what would God think about this situation?

As the bible says: His thoughts are not our thoughts.

And to say it with the words of Paul: I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.(Rom 14,14)

So the rule is: If you think these books are unclean, then don't read them. If you think they are clean, then don't advice anyone that consider them unclean to read them.

It's a book.

so is the book of shadows..

I think we need to be careful what we watch and read.

People said the oijuio board was just a game.. sorry it isnt.

Yoga is just exercise yet it has connection with the kundalini spirit.

understand what I am saying. Things may seem ok on the outside but spiritually there is more to it..

Look, i'm not going to get into a debate about whether or not this book or that book is satanic or evil or anything else, figure out that one on your knees. What I will say to you however is that if you passed around something that was demonic in nature, you are guilty of that and that is not to be taken lightly.

One more thing, some things are inheritedly demonic, others are not. That is one of many reasons I won't get into that debate here. For example even if the Harry Potter books are not demonic, it is possible for a given book to be demonized. For that reason, we can't know about the individual case here.

Well, in any way, I've asked God for forgiveness several times today, and the bible says that if we confess our sins he is faithful to forgive.

I am going to call the pastor's son and have him throw that book into the waste basket.

( I just threw the whole series of the Chronicles of Narnia and some other books and DVDs in the dumpster. Now I think I should have burnt them... LOL).

Grace covered you....you didn't do it on purpose. As long as you live and do your best to serve God, grace has got you covered! Enjoy the blessing of God's love and grace and live unto your Father, not what others think or do....

Books like Harry Potter encourage you to believe in yourself as powerful and special as do many fiction type books and are very harmful to the soul. Always feed your soul Truth, so that you do not offend the Holy Spirit in you.

Blessings,

AOF

John 12:35 Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going.

Deuteronomy 18:9-13
9 When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in [a] the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. 13 You must be blameless before the LORD your God.

It is my opinion, that children may become enchanted by the magical existence of Harry and his friends, becoming desensitized. We have the responsibility to not only teach our children about the virtues that please God, but also about the spiritual forces that we are up against

Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

That said, I don't know if there is anything sinful about passing along a book that you didn't know to be improper. If God hasn't brought awareness to your attention previously, then you're not defying him in your action. I think what is positive about the action, is its brought something to the forefront of you mind for you to research and pray about to see how God is directing you personally in this matter.

I have just one thing to say about this widely talked about topic of interest: FAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The wi9chcraft, and, wizardry is all fake. JKmade these books to make kids read more, and, to have fun, and, just to pretend. That is all that it is. And, it is okay to send these books to these people. I read them, and, they hve not made me want to join a cult, or, anything. ANd, I cannot wait for the last 3, yes, I said 3 movies to come out. They are possibly making 2 movies for the Deathly Hallows, as it has a l;ot of things to deal with in it for one moie. ANyuways, I am done saying what I have to say!!

There is probably more offensive stuff (war, crime reports, violence, and pure hedonism on your daily news than in Harry Potter. People who can't distinguish a literary genre from the 'real stuff' are not being too wise.

So what would God think about this situation?

What i was trying to say is that you ask God to help you see the line between what it is to be a "Popular christian in modern times" and what it is to have a real relationship with Jesus.. These two very different things (most of the time) and Don't have anything to do with each other..

Pop christianity would sell you certain books to read, a certain kind of music, a certain look, a specific type of church, and try and sell you on a over all formula to run your life by, in an attempt to conform your way to heaven.. And if you don't buy what they tell you to buy, or look a certain way, at certain times, (Or read the wrong kind of book.) Then you are quick to be judged and/or reprimanded.

This is what i meant by what i said.. Learn to hear God's voice over others.. You asked what he thinks? He thinks, you should seek him. I know that asking questions here can be apart of that process, so long as you looking for God's answers, and not acceptance from your christian peers about (in this case) your reading material.

The only thing left for you to do is confess your sin to the one you gave the books to.

Then with your actions taken already you will be cleansed from any sin.

ALWAYS REMEMBER:

JESUS IS RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE AT!!! EVEN THOUGH YOU DON'T SEE HIM!!!
