A clergyman hopelessly entrenched in Roman Catholic dogma once taunted Tyndale with the statement, “We are better to be without God’s laws than the Pope’s”.

Tyndale was infuriated by such Roman Catholic heresies, and he replied, “I defy the Pope and all his laws.
If God spare my life ere many years, I will cause the boy that drives the plow to know more of the scriptures than you!”
:D

I promise it is not a trick question :p

King Henry VIII and Great Bible question

I brought this up on a post on another thread but got now response so I thought I would make a seperate thread on it.

What affect on Christianity and Theology did the Great Bible that King Henry commisioned have?

And does anyone have any views on this particular english version of the Bible?

http://www.greatsite.com/timeline-en...m-tyndale.html

*snip*

...Tyndale was then strangled and burnt at the stake in the prison yard, Oct. 6, 1536. His last words were, "Lord, open the king of England's eyes."

This prayer was answered three years later, in the publication of King Henry VIII’s 1539 English “Great Bible”.

Great Bible - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Great Bible was the first authorized edition of the Bible in English, authorized by King Henry VIII of England to be read aloud in the church services of the Church of England.

The Great Bible was prepared by Myles Coverdale, working under commission of Sir Thomas Cromwell, Secretary to Henry VIII and Vicar General. In 1538, Cromwell directed the clergy to provide "one book of the bible of the largest volume in English, and the same set up in some convenient place within the said church that ye have care of, whereas your parishioners may most commodiously resort to the same and read it."

Consider Matthew 16:18 where it says: "I will build my church."

Of the 20 translations (19 of which are Protestant translations) at Bible.cc's website, 17 of them use the word "church" there. Should they be criticized for doing so?
Not really, I wasn't saying it is always a horrible translation, I was just saying it is thrown in a few times when it doesn't need to be, because they want the word church in there as often as possible.
As we several people said, there isn't really a perfect word to translate it to, which it probably should be done on context usually, but instead of discerning what the context would dictate, they just put "church" every time.
Young's LT doesn't even use the word church

Sorry! The word "church" doesn't occur in the YLT.

King Henry VIII and Great Bible question

I've been studying on these men of God. God must'a given specific graces and Himself, kept them standin' strong in the midst of such a tidal wave of stormin' against them. Makes ya' appreciate how God moooooved powerfully through these men, even as they faced horrific deaths.

Tyndale was faced with a local church that was doing a dreadful job of teaching and not making Scripture accessible to the people. He, along with others, were convinced if Scripture could be made accessible then through it God would reform the church as necessary, but the local church systematically obstructed that. Having tried to work with the bishops and been prevented he had little choice but to step outside.

And good on him for doing so, because whatever some of the details and however long its taken the Catholic Church is now committed to making scripture available to every Christian in their own language and teaching them to read it.

True the above.
I was raised Catholic. It was the Catholic Church making the scriptures available to me through a little group called The Living Water Fellowship that I first accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ. I have since grown away from Catholicism, but I know more than a few saved Catholics.

There is generally a calm both before and after a storm.

Brings to mind these 2 events of Jonah and Jesus on a boat:
Jonah 1:12 And he said to them, "Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you.
For I know that this great tempest [is] because of me."
15 So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.
Mat 8:24 And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves.
But He was asleep.
26 But He said to them, "Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?"
Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.

that means God "vomited", doesn't it?
Job mentions God making a wicked person vomit up their riches...interesting

Job 20:
15 He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again:
God shall cast them out of his belly.
16 He shall suck the poison of asps: the viper's tongue shall slay him.

Lazarus and the Rich Man - Here a little, there a little - Commentary
JESUS VS THE PHARISEES

Mat 23:33
"Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of the gehenna?"

The Pharisees, who were "lovers of money" (Luke 16:14), realized that the Messiah was alluding to them with this parable and took offense. They scoffed at Yeshua.
The final part of his response to the derision of the Pharisees and scribes was the parable of Lazarus and the rich man..........
