There is no valid, approved, or authoritative Catholic council that prohibits the careful and efficacious reading of Sacred Scripture. None at all; Saints and Popes have encouraged the devout reading of Holy Scripture.

Pope Leo XIII, of blessed memory, had lauded and greatly encouraged Catholic Christians to read the scriptures; with the guidance of the Holy Catholic Church and the Holy Ghost.

The particular criticisms of reading scripture would be only that one must not misinterpret or privately interpret Holy Scripture apart from Holy Tradition, the guidance of the Holy Ghost, and how the Saints (who were guided by the Holy Ghost) and the Holy Church of God as whole has publically interpreted the Divine Word of God.

One cannot read scripture in a vacuum; or apart from how the Church of Christ has historically and traditionally interpreted. Or as the Scriptures say in in St Peter's Epistles:

If that was direct to me, I didn't suggest there was.

I simply suggest that, since the current Pope and the recent Synod are doing exactly what Tyndale and the other early English reformers wanted, supporters of Tyndale ought to be applauding and getting on board with that. Not renacting his battles.

If there was, then my parish must be in grave error, because we got bibles for confirmation, and my priest had a homily on the importance of reading the bible a copule of weeks ago.

Interesting. How long has your parish been giving bibles out for those receiving confirmation?
And is that a widely accepted practice in Catholic parishes elsewhere? Thanks

I dont know about Confirmations here, but pretty much all the young Catholic people come through our (Catholic) school where they are given at least one bible, encouraged to read it, taught something about reading it, and will use it extensively in Religion lessons.

Don't know. What heresies did he preach that got him labeled a heretic?

Do you know how many saints were condemned by Rome as "heretics?"

It was no different than when the Sanhedrin shouted "Release Barabbas for us!",
or when they stoned Stephen while Saul held their coats.

Was Tyndale the only Reformer to go against Roman Catholic dogma/doctrines?
And how do others here view him? Thanks

http://www.greatsite.com/timeline-english-bible-history/william-tyndale.html

A clergyman hopelessly entrenched in Roman Catholic dogma once taunted Tyndale with the statement, “We are better to be without God’s laws than the Pope’s”.

Tyndale was infuriated by such Roman Catholic heresies, and he replied, “I defy the Pope and all his laws.
If God spare my life ere many years, I will cause the boy that drives the plow to know more of the scriptures than you!”
