This is actually a concept that I began to work on as early as 1982.
The redemption of man in on two levels.
The Spiritual Level and The Physical Level.
We tend to sort of mix these together and assume when the word says "salvation" that it is always referring to the eternal salvation of the spirit. Of the two, this is absolutely without question the more important.
A couple passages that shed light. 1 John 5 divides the two kinds of sin, two kinds of death, and two kinds of life.
1 John 5:16-17 LITV
16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not unto death, he shall ask; and He shall give life to him, to the ones not sinning unto death. There is a sin unto death. I do not say that he should ask about that.
17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not unto death.
Physical life as opposed to spiritual life.
Physical death as opposed to spiritual death.
Physical sin (not unto spirtual death) as opposed to spiritual sin (unto spirtual death).
We are not to pray for a brother who has sinned unto spiritual death.
We are to pray for a brother who has sinned unto physical death, and the Lord will give him (physical) life.
The spiritual sin(unto death) is that sin after the similitude of Adam by which spiritual death entered into all mankind.
Romans 5:14 KJV
14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
The physical sins (unto physical death) are flesh sins that will corrupt the flesh.
Galatians 6:7-8 KJV
7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
This concept presents how a Christian may sin (not unto death) and yet keep the salvation of his spirit. If he does not repent (or have someone pray for him) he could very well die (physically) as a result of sin... while still keeping his eternal life. The fornicator in 1 Cor 5 is a perfect example of this:
1 Corinthians 5:1-5 KJV
1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.
2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
This is a resolution to the eternal security debate. It is possible to be saved spiritual while lost physically.
