If the money is donated to a PAC can it be legally used as Trump's personal legal defence fund?

OB

Seems there are few limits on what it can be spent on..
Unlike campaign funds, which have tight controls on how they can be spent, leadership PACs such as Save America carry few restrictions. Republicans and Democrats alike have drawn criticism for using them to pay family members and to fund luxury events in exotic locations. A 2018 report by the Campaign Legal Center and Issue One, two groups that advocate campaign finance reform, said some leadership PACs have been used as vehicles to “subsidize lavish lifestyles” of politicians “on their donors’ dimes.”
Donations under $8K to Trump ‘election defense’ instead go to president, RNC

As I understand it Trump may have had a few fans from his Apprentice TV show. The real political support base came into existence when he began to contest the Presidential race.

Once he's no longer President he lacks the impetus/status of an upcoming Presidential race. The likelihood he will contest the next POTUS election seems remote given his age. In any case the real competition for the next POTUS is years away.

Remember Trump is no longer a 'change'. He's now a qualified member of the 'Swamp'.

The danger period for Trump is the period immediately following Biden's inauguration. With attention switched to Biden, Trump is in real danger of becoming an interesting piece of history.

I am constantly amazed at the level of wishful thinking associated with Trump followers.

OB
I am constantly amazed at the total memory recall failure associated with those who voted for Biden who appears to be setting up Obama 3. apparently everyone has forgotten what they disliked and the many problems of the Obama administration. I am certain that it will all come back to them in a year or two and then they will wished they still had President Trump in charge.

I agree that Trump will continue to be Trump.

I'm theorising that he may become increasingly irrelevant - just another grumpy Tweeter.

OB
Assuming he's not banned just like any other normal user would be given his antics. If he's pushed to more and more limited platforms that will certainly limit his reach.

And he's already started a war with Fox News - I can't imagine they'll be happy to support him once he leaves office.

They will if it encourages his base to watch and keep their ratings strong.

I think Trump has a very large group of people who think he should or did win the election, I also think there is another large group of people who are going to become very unhappy that they voted him out once they find out just exactly what they voted in.
Well, if only for the fact that the President of the United States WON'T be tweeting deranged, angry, idiotic, insulting, mysoginist, baseless, inaccurate, conspiracy theories, etc. some of us will be VERY happy about what we voted in.

He's going to be facing legal action and criminal investigation from countless directions, and he'll respond in the only way he knows how. He'll rage, deny, demand and denigrate, just like he has for the last 4 years. He'll doubtless also monetize as much as possible by constantly asking his supporters for donations.
And just like the elderly Christians who gratefully hand over their retirement savings to conmen televangelists who can recite the Bible frontwards and backwards and fly private jets to their many mansions around the world, trump supporters will gladly hand over their hard earned money to the billionaire grifter who thinks his followers should foot the legal bills for all of his crimes and scandals so that he can maintain the extravagant lifestyle that he's used to and that his supporters will never experience (heck, they can't even get past the front gate at Mar-A-Lago).

Seeing as Obama was voted in by a popular majority twice and Trump couldn’t even get that once, I strongly doubt that.

Money going to PAC's have little restriction on their use. Besides, legal niceties have never mattered much to Trump.

Keep dreaming, that’s never going to happen.
I mean, if I wanted to dream, I would dream he would capital punishment, and get buried in an unmarked grave on Hart Island along with some of the people he killed.

Not me , I learned with Bush . Republicans seem to screw up our country. Hopefully more people will get that. When their parents politics wear off.

Hopefully he will be rotting in a cell before that becomes a possibility.

Illegitimate despotic Commie Socialist regimes do have a long history of imprisoning their political foes.

He'll stay in the public's attention so he can make money off the people that believe his cries of fraud. As long as followers will send him money; he won't stop the "poor me; everyone is mean to me" act. I haven't ruled out that he may flee the country.

It's not completely unprecedented for a former president to hold some other position of influence after they leave presidential office.

It's not common (and at Trump's advanced age, it's very "not common" lol), but not out of the realm of possibility provided that he keeps his cult following in certain pockets of the country.

Obviously, none of these are modern examples, but examples none the less.

Andrew Johnson served as a Senator after his time as president
John Quincy Adams was a House Rep after his time as president
Taft served as a Supreme Court Justice after his his time as president

Given that Trump does have a cult following in certain areas, I could see him establishing some form of residence in an area where he still has popularity, and then running for Rep/Senator just to stroke his own ego.

Not likely. He might win and I can’t think of Trump more miserable than being just another 1 of 100 or 1 of 435. Yeah, he’ll have an outsized influence outside of the chamber but him only having one vote when decision time comes will drive him up a wall.

Not to mention, Senators and Representatives actually have codes of conduct they are expected to live by and can be investigated -- and even prosecuted -- if there is evidence that they did not abide by those laws.

No, I think he will continue to serve as an entertainer.
