Hello Jonathan. Would you say at the day of Pentecost that the miracle was in the people hearing the gospel in their own language rather than the disciples speaking in different languages? God Bless :)

BOTH. The disciples speaking were Galileans. They only knew a couple languages such as Greek/Hebrew, etc. The hearers came from at least 16 different countries/languages/regions (Acts 2:8-11) The disciples had not naturally learned all these "other tongues" they were speaking in. They were "utterances" given directly by the Holy Spirit that could be understood directly by the hearers (without interpretation).

At the tower of Babel, God scattered the people by confusing their languages so that no man could understand his neighbor. At Pentecost, God GATHERED the people by giving men the ability to speak "other (unknown/unlearned) languages". This is a manifest of Tongues.... it is Unknown to the Speaker. It's when the speaker speaks by the Holy Spirit, not necessarily his own brain.

1) Pentecost... speakers did not know the languages they were speaking in
2) Messages in Tongues... the speaker does not know the language he is speaking, must be interpreted
3) Praying in Tongues... the speaker does not know what the language means in any human/brain language. God has to give an internal interpretation to the mind separately, which He usually does, but not necessarily...

It's possible to speak from the Spirit and NOT the mind. It's also possible to speak from the mind AND the Spirit. But most people just speak from their own mind, and NOT the Spirit.

What I teach is that there are 3 Tongues in Scripture:

1) Pentecost miracle of each person hearing one message in their own language
2) Messages in Tongues with Interpretation (for use in the Assembly)
3) Praying in Tongues aka Praying in the Spirit (not for the Assembly but personal, private edification only)

I would call your #1 and #3 the same thing, and add the miracle of Pentecost to get 3.

But I agree with you!
Anyone who reads 1 Corinthians 14 properly, without prejudice, would see that very clearly.
