• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Has anyone tried the Tomatis method? Its a therapy I read about that has been successful with autistic people (both children and adults) in the book 'Awakening Ashley' by Sharon Ruben.

Just wondered if anyone had heard of it. I have a friend with autism and he said he may try it, but I don't know if its expensive or how long it takes, in the book the mother went through it with her daughter who was a toddler at the time, but she also was doing all these other interventions (dietary, sensory, brushing, play) as well. Her toddler, Ashley, is normal functioning today.

In 2003 it cost around $10,000. This could vary considerably since then, and in different countries.

Some parents did find it effective, but not a sure thing. (see reviews online, and comparisons with other much less expensive methods).

The dietary methods have had a good history, but again not always - there's so much dis-information out there, both officially and unofficially.

Still, the dietary methods are almost always beneficial for everyone in the family, just basically health wise, and have the added benefit that people have to eat and drink anyway, so choosing good diet just makes sense.

The "listening method" , etc, might require a much greater cost output, and time input, with less results, or with good results, but no guarantees.

Continue research, as there are a lot of support groups (world wide) that have good hope and perhaps better results reported than usually told families. ( ?maybe just not to get their hopes up? I don't know...) But finding others who have had the same or similar struggles is generally , (sigh, not always), a good idea.

IF you can find a support group/ clinic with proven track record, that is one good goal.

Here's one link that
compares (by users/ posters) different methods
including the Tomatis method/ costs/ results/ hopes.

Oh, that would be out of reach for my friend! I asked the website what it would cost and they were very cagy about it and said they needed to do tests first to determine if someone was eligible. i thought it would be you just listen to some cds or something, but seems like more is involved.
