Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) is now among the leading candidates to become Donald Trump’s running mate, according to a report. The New York Times cited sources familiar with the former president’s thinking who said Cotton has emerged as a top contender in the Republican veepstakes alongside other current favorites North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Tim Scott (R-SC), and J.D. Vance (R-OH).

--

It's an interesting list. A few months ago, that list probably had Scott and Vance on it, but it would also certainly have featured:
Nikki Haley (who has recently endorsed Trump, perhaps in a vain hope to get back on the shortlist)
MTG
Kristi Noem (who may have shot her chances along with her dog)
Elise Stefanik
Kari Lake (who may not have had much chance, but she spent enough time at Mar a Lago angling for it)

If the list is accurate, it may indicate that the campaign has made at least one major decision about the veepstakes.

Cotton is from my state.

He was gunning for Veep, obviously, when he said peaceful protesters should be thrown off the Little Rock bridge.

Trump obviously sensed a kindred spirit.

And Trump might have remembered the day when peaceful people in wheelchairs waited in the hall outside Cotton's office and he had them arrested.

That's enough to make any red-blooded aspiring dictator's heart go pitter pat.

Several Trump running mate contenders have received vetting materials as search heats up

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance are among those who were sent the vetting materials, another source familiar with the process said.

...other candidates under consideration include South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and New York Rep. Elise Stefanik.

Many of the potential picks have spent recent weeks publicly demonstrating their loyalty to Trump, including appearing with him at court for his New York criminal hush money trial and defending him on television.

In an interview with Newsmax on Tuesday, Trump mentioned Scott, Burgum, Rubio, Vance and Ben Carson

I must admit that I'm still amused by people eagerly lining up to be thrown under the bus by Trump. You'd think that they would have figured out the pattern by now. However, Carson would probably do well as a yes-man VP.

TRUMP VP SEARCH. I'm told that the Trump campaign has asked for background information from:
- Sen. J.D. Vance
- Sen. Marco Rubio
- Sen. Tim Scott
- Gov. Doug Burgum
- Rep. Byron Donalds
- Rep. Elise Stefanik
- Dr. Ben Carson
