Oh, I'm well aware that the Cold War "Socialism=bad!" mindset is the root of the refusal to acknowledge NAZIsm as conservative. I still get immensely irritated by people who get hung up on what something is called, or supposed to do, or used to do, at the expense of understanding what it actually is.

Nationalism is actually not a Conservative POV. Historically, it's a movement of popular revolt against the existing order.

We tend to think of it being Conservative--even though the Socialist regimes of recent memory (USSR, China, etc.) have been exceedingly nationalistic--but it's actually a movement or POV that arose in opposition to the kind of thinking that characterized Conservatism (universal verities, order, transcendent values, etc).

At the least, I'd call "Nationalism" a wash, having an appeal that isn't confined to the political Left or to the political Right, either.
