  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yes, it's up there in the stupidity stakes with 'you can't be racist towards Muslims, because Muslims aren't a race'
It's certainly emblematic of people who don't care about reality if it conflicts with their ideology.

But German slaves, in German factories, utilising German logistics and support. Again, say what you like about Hitler, but he was good for German manufacturing and employment.
Good for the economy, good for the infrastructure, good for law and order, good at maintaining the borders*, good at defending the cultural purity of the nation, good at making other countries pay! The appeal of such people lives on.

* when i say 'maintaining the borders', I'm including expanding them...

Which is why they were put in place by the conservative Junkers. Hindenburg appointed Hitler Chancellor, he did not win a majority in an election.
B...but... it says "socialism" right in the name!

There's nothing conservative about National Socialism.
Which party will you be supporting at the next general election, in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea?

...and it is a variety of socialism. I realize that you like to think anyone who isn't in your corner must be a dunce who bases his entire understanding of political isms solely upon the words that appear in various political parties' names, but I just recognize that for what it is--part of the studied incivility that is characteristic of Leftist political dialogue. When you can't deal with the facts, use insults.

Precisely. Hence;

What many people like to forget is that, were it not for the Holocaust, Hitler is pretty much a perfect candidate for a certain type of genuinely well meaning but small minded socially conservative voter.

The really frightening thing is, that most of those people, if asked, would claim they would have never supported Hitler, and genuinely mean it. People really don't get the idea of "the banality of evil", and that it can be built on good intentions. It rarely if ever shows up like Darth Vader at the head of a legion of willfully evil bad guys.

Go ahead. Explain to us any facet of National Socialism that conforms to any actual definition of classical socialism. Be sure to cite your sources.

It's the whole American hang up on the idea big govt = socialism, planned economy = socialism, etc.

The fact is that Hitler was an opportunist who used whatever methods worked to prepare Germany for war. This included privatising banks and other capitalist ideas, coupled with 'socialist' planned economy, along with a social program intended to keep the population at home complacent.

Oh, I'm well aware that the Cold War "Socialism=bad!" mindset is the root of the refusal to acknowledge NAZIsm as conservative. I still get immensely irritated by people who get hung up on what something is called, or supposed to do, or used to do, at the expense of understanding what it actually is.

See also; all the "Democrats are racists because they supported segregation" nonsense, and "Neolithic Venus Figurines are representations of the Roman Goddess Venus because they're called the same thing" dingbattery we had around here the other day.

One imagines these people visiting London, Ontario and complaining the locals were conspiring to hide Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square from them.

It's good that you admit to not knowing how National Socialism compares with other forms of Socialism. That's probably a start.

You just gotta love it. First, they don't like Trump for his stands, so if he moderates any of them in the critics' direction or gives specifics as they'd demanded, he's hated all the more

It's not about hate. It's about what Trump supporters should be thinking to themselves. On immigration policy, Trump said he'd build a wall, and his followers chanted "build a wall", they voted him to the top of the GOP ticket, and now Trump is saying "My immigration policy will be 4 more years of Obama."

This is a welcome return to sanity for Trump, but I don't think his most ardent followers will see it that way. If this were a normal election year, we'd just say some stuff about candidates moving to the middle after the primaries are over and the general election begins. But with the Donald, who knows? A strong current of his support came from the fringe right. He's alienating them, and I'm not sure the center of the GOP trusts this hint of a new him.

Oh, please. Reaching for a strawman to ridicule is no substitute for a knowledge of the nature of any political ideology.

Yet you seem not to be able to explain how socialism and national socialism are similar beyond the name.

Do you think his followers can be alienated from him, or will they find a way to rationalise this 180 as somehow being exactly what he said all along?

I'm sorry, but if that were the case, it would have been written that way.

On immigration policy, Trump said he'd build a wall, and his followers chanted "build a wall", they voted him to the top of the GOP ticket, and now Trump is saying "My immigration policy will be 4 more years of Obama."
But he's still saying he'll build the wall. Can you understand, thanks to my calling you on that verbal 'slight of hand,' what kind of tactics I was referring to above?

You just gotta love it. First, they don't like Trump for his stands, so if he moderates any of them in the critics' direction or gives specifics as they'd demanded, he's hated all the more and called even more names for it.

Mega Mouth toned it down because his very own party was threatening to withdraw his funding. Mega Mouth's policies, if you can grace them with that name, are determined by what he thinks will appeal to rednecks in the American south, and tomorrow they can be the exact reverse of what they are today.

If he believed in anything, apart from Donald Trump, he would stick by those beliefs. Even if those belefs were noxious, he could at least be said to believe in something.

In case no one has figured it out, Trump's "outreach" to minorities is not about getting more minority votes. It is about getting more moderate White votes. "See, Julie***, Trump's not so bad.... he's willing to be nicer to those poor immigrants and African Americans. BTW, Julie, your lawn looks great. Do you mind if I get the number for your Mexican yard man?"

*** Apologies to everyone named Julie.

I am rather surprised that there has been no mention of the naked statues of Trump that showed up in a few major cities
The one in CLEVELAND HEIGHTS lasted about an hour before police seized it because it was against the law. I am sure they got lots and lots of phone calls. So they had to take care of it so they could go back to eating donuts and drinking coffee and chasing pokemons. Police here spend most of their time responding to calls they get.

Anyone else ever get tired of people who can't distinguish between what a party is called vs. what a party does?
What are you talking about? The Democratic People's Republic of Korea is completely democratic; everyone gets one vote, a true democracy.
