I was just wandering. Do you color code for different things? Do you have a "system" you use? I highlight favorite passages in yellow, any references to the day of the Lord I highlight red, sister scriptures I wright in green, and I do a lot of underlining. I just got a new Bible and was looking for ideas on how to mark it up in a way that will help me in my studying. Thank you in advance for any ideas or suggestions.

Although I don't use it (I just highlight and underline and make notes), my wife uses the Inductive Study method taught primarily by Kay Arthur. It uses all sorts of markings and color.

What is your purpose in marking your Bible? This will help determine how best to do it. Some people mark as a way of emphasizing passages that really speak to them. Some people mark to help them dissect difficult passages. There are a bunch of reasons that a person might mark in their Bible. But, I would encourage to know why you are doing it before you do. Another thing to consider is whether it might be more helpful to keep a notebook with you when you read. For very detailed study, it can be difficult to make adequate and usable notes on the pages of the Bible.

I highlight in my bible quite a bit, but I use my main bible to do all studying in, so I don't want to go too crazy with the coloring, it bugs me. ;) I use yellow for almost everything since it's mild. There are times I do mark in pink highlighter for verses I'd like to remember, but I generally use the yellow. I use the ESV Study bible and I have a lot in there - I keep my favorite small daily devotionals in there by the scripture it's discussing. They're pretty inspiring. Also pamplets and such. Also have marked every blank spot in the bible (like a blank spot before this chapter, half a page here, etc.) to type out notes and study and attach to the bible. Also have some writing by pen. I'm pretty obsessive strange about it but it's a hobby of mine and helps me get into bible study as it makes it more exciting to me with my personality that I can get creative with it. ;) I have a picture in there I 'drew for God' when I was a young teenager still there, as well as an old 20 (long, strange story) from when I was 14. The first empty pages of the bible I have some artwork in there and also on before the ESV title page I have made a page of beautiful quotations that I find inspiring about God. It's pretty detailed in there and a constant work in progress. :)

Bible paper can be pretty thin, so they make special pens to avoid bleed through.
You may want to read the comments posted to this entry of the "Bible Design and Binding" blog:

Bible Design and Binding: Writing and Highlighting in Your Bible

I use a notebook as dies-1 suggested because I have zillions of Bibles, including the Rainbow Study Bible that His discple3 mentioned.

If you really like to take notes, then they make wide margin Bibles, and loose-leaf Bibles that allow you to add as many pages of notes as you wish. I made a really nice loose-leaf Bible from a family Bible I found on Amazon for 2.00 (it had a broken spine).

HTH! God bless! :)

I've read several times that people specifically use pink for favourite verses.
"Larry Hardison" has an interesting system he tells about in:
Do you write, highlight, underline or mark in your Bible? | United Church of God

i highlighted my favorite verses in pink
I haven't decided yet which all colours I'll start using now for what subject, other than:
* Green for humbleness ... the same colour that the Rainbow Study Bible uses.

If You just wanna see what colours the Rainbow Study Bible uses for what subject, buy only the gospel according to Jn:
http://www.amazon.com/Catholic-Rain...0490/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330876019&sr=8-1

I argue against using electronic devices, in: http://www.christianforums.com/t7541241-post59802130/#post59802130
I've also started using the Youversion Android app for reading and taking notes, still like paper better so far.
I also pull small leafs from an old pocket calendar that I didn't use much, when I find verses I want to compare in such Bible versions which I don't happen to have at hand for the moment, or I note that in a notebook which I also use for writing down Bible passages and explanations in the Bible-study group I attend in English in Kista, Stockholm, EU.

In addition to this I have post-it colour-coded indexes that can be fastened in at the page edges. These can be bought in office-supply stores that have a good assortment.

I also use Tip-Ex and a pen to correct the Bible text.

And I write in the margins.

I like to use the inductive study method, using symbols to mark key passages. I started out with three basic symbols. That has evolved into 13 different ones, with two sets of colors to go with the symbols. Its a good shorthand method, saves space and having to write so small that six months down the road you can't read what you wrote. It makes it easy to follow related verses through the individual books I study, or for that matter I can use a symbol for, say, an Old Testament passage and write a New Testament verse address next to it to follow a fulfilled prophecy, a valid promise to both Israel and the Christian, and other related passages.

Yes I did that blue, yellows, greens pinks ^_^

That sorta followed me over online (with less colors) but I always did that in the scriptures. I would mark them after comparitive paterns. Similitudes after a building (stones, built, temple) in blues and Trees fruit, ground (in green) etc that type thing, I did that so if I read something that made me think of another verse (as it was quickened to me) I could flip through it fast and keep my eyes peeled for whatever particular color I knew the passage was under. It was a great help to me.

Then down the margins I would write the verses one verse might take me too. That was when I didnt have a computer, and would handwrite the verses out (afterward) and meditate on them and then file them into a binder under the same sections (after whichever similitude they would apply).

Worked well for me, your left with a VERY colorful bible ^_^
