Just because I can NOT wait for this to come out!

Treasury of Daily Prayer

Is it October yet? HUH???

I took a look at this, and I think I'm going to recommend it to our Resource Center at church. I definitely want to get it. I have tried to do daily offices before, but most of the resources I've been able to find are based on medieval Catholic books of hours... and the Mariology in them really frustrates me.

I love the idea of having not only Scripture readings each day, but readings from the BoC. It looks like the sort of reference I'd have at my bedside next to my little Bible and my hymnal.

Does anyone else here enjoy classic literature? Outside of informational and theological writings, it's all I care to read.
I'm referring to Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Emerson, Thoreau, Tennyson, Pushkin, etc. and I'm pretty certain I was one of THE most excited people on the planet when Beowulf was brought to the screen for all the world to be exposed to how insightful and entertaining such ancient fiction could be. Heck, I still enjoy reading Beatrix Potter, even though there isn't anyone to read it to anymore.

Does Treasure Island count? I read Moby Dick many moons ago, and didn't see what the big deal was. Pretty boring actually. ^_^

I'll read anything I can get my hands on. I just picked up a load of books from the library dealing with essential oils and perfume making. Also a bunch of Organic Farming and Mother Earth News magazines.

But the classics? mmm yes. Love. Edith Wharton, Jane Austen, Beowulf in olde English as well as the Canterbury Tales in the same. I like Colonial American works and the poetry of Christina Rossetti. Oh my. I ADORE Christina Rossetti.

Queen Elizabeth I was a wonderful writer. Her words flow with a lilting tone even when they're not "happy".

The Federalist Papers are a good read if you're into Poli Sci or just want to know more about how this country was founded. I'm reading a book called "Patriots" about the founding Fathers. Excellent stuff.

I enjoy historical fiction (that Lion of Ireland sounds good, Synger!) and contemporary fiction, both historical and contemporary mystery and I have a deep and abiding love for Urban Fantasy. Especially Harry Dresden. *sigh* :)

Anything? I'll send you some articles on piano repair. If that doesn't put you to sleep, there is something wrong with you. LOL

I would have to agree with you about Moby Dick. Treasure Island is great, but when all the other kids were reading that, I was all but inseparable from anything by E. A. Poe. :sorry:

Ooh, and this one looks good too...

Gathered Guests

Hi! newbie here! This stopped me! Gathered Guests is coming out in paperback! Awesome! I'm slightly biased towards this book because Dr. Maschke was writing it while I was taking his Lutheran Worship class which very much shaped my views on worship.
Oh, and I love classics like Jane Eyre, Anne of Green Gables, The Chronicles of Narnia, and tons of others. I'm not particularly a fan of Nathaniel Hawthorne, though. The House of Seven Gables was too painful to read.

The local (very small) library has an ongoing book sale, buy a bag full for a buck. One of the books I picked up is called The Church of the Lutheran Reformation by Conrad Bergendoff has anyone read this book? It was published in 1967. I picked up some other ones too.

I must be one of those "other" kids. I just started reading it. LOL Funny thing is I bought it years ago as part of that 100 Greatest Books Ever Written from Easton Press. Thats' how I read Moby Dick too. Poe is always good.

That was my Grandma's favorite book of all times.

Goodness, some of these books everyone is sharing are quite expensive.

They don't have to be. Here's a webpage that sells tons of classic books and other types of books in electronic book format. You just need to install one of the readers and then you can read books either on your PC or in your PDA or cell phone, if you phone has that capability.

I just finished reading a book I checked out today from the library. It was a rather eccentric murder mystery. The title is:

The Penguin Who Knew Too Much.

The book was an absolute page turner. Somehow I feel I want to check out other materials by the author. I was just laughing so hard at some of the things in there, like the fact that book opens with penguins in the basement of a victorian house. Really good book. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Now onto those westerns I also got.

OH OH! Is that the one about the lady blacksmith? If so, ALL her books are hilarious!

Yep. It is. I fully plan one reading all of her other books too. I simply could not put the book down until it was done. I especially liked how the main charactor's cousin had the guy dressing up as a vampire and jumping out of bushes. That was funny.

Today I simple read the first six proverbs and the book of Ephesians. Tried to read those westerns, but they sickened me.

You need to start at the begining because the story builds and the characters (well the supporting ones) just get funnier and funnier.

I've been reading in my Narrated Bible. I'm up to the Judges. I'm half way through that part and just finished Ruth and the story of Samson.

Hope is now reading "The Penguin Who Knew Too Much". She is suspicious of every charactor in book (and rightfully so at this point). I think she will be rather surprised by who Dr. Blake possibly may be. Any rate, we will be looking into the other books this weekend and I will try to start from the beginning if I can.

As for Ephesians, that is what we are studying in the adult forum between services at church. Still haven't decided whether or not to become members yet. However, that is another thread....
