I'm on the "vision" committee at my church, so I've been interested in books about how the Church can best serve in the post-modern era (where the community just isn't interested in "doing church" anymore). At our leadership conference this past summer, the speaker was the head of the Hawaii/nevada/California district, and he recommends The Present Future to his congregations. I've been quite intrigued with it so far.

I'm also beginning Dr. Maier's translation of Eusebius's The Church History. Pastor is going through it in his adult Sunday School class this fall, and I'll miss it because I'm leading a concurrent class. So I'm reading along as best I can.

I had worked on material from Reggie McNeal about 10-15 years ago. While these books can provide insight into the culture, the one thing often lacking is an understanding of catechesis as the learning side of discipleship and the integration of the sacramental life (Reggie is Baptist). Of course, the Law-Gospel distinction and application is critical.

Currently I am reading:

Theology:

Law and Gospel and the Means of Grace by David Scaer

Doctrine Is Life: Essays on Justification and Sctiprures by Robert Preus (edited by Klemet Preus)

Doctrine Is Life: Essays on Justification and the Lutheran Confessions by Robert Preus (edited by Klemet Preus)

I am writing a review of E. Schlink's book, Theology of the Lutheran Confessions, and I am writing a multi-piece review of the NLT Study Bible.

Fun Reading

Name Withheld Judith A. Jance (J. P. Beaumont novel)

Justice Denied Judith A. Jance (J. P. Beaumont novel)

David and Winston: How the Friendship Between Lloyd George and Churchill Changed the Course of History by Robert Lloyd George

That sounds good! I'm reading Loving God With All Your Mind: Thinking as a Christian in the post Modern World by Gene E. Veith (of Spirituality of the Cross fame) Excellent so far.

Oooh! I have this too and have yet to start it! I might have to read it along with you...if you wanna.

I haven't been reading anything really important. My most recent book was "The Essential Chihauhau". I am simply trying to understand and care for my dog. Otherwise, I am suffering from severe physical exhaustion due to excessive strain at work this past week. The results are paying off, but I really hurt. I am now off to bed. Take care....

Does anyone else here enjoy classic literature? Outside of informational and theological writings, it's all I care to read.
I'm referring to Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Emerson, Thoreau, Tennyson, Pushkin, etc. and I'm pretty certain I was one of THE most excited people on the planet when Beowulf was brought to the screen for all the world to be exposed to how insightful and entertaining such ancient fiction could be. Heck, I still enjoy reading Beatrix Potter, even though there isn't anyone to read it to anymore.

I just re-read Jane Eyre a few months ago. And rented the BBC version on Netflix, and hooked my 7-yo daughter on it as well. Also read Bleak House, and rented the video afterward. I enjoy Victorian fiction.

I've read some Russian literature, but not as much as I'd like. Never enjoyed the transcendentalists as much (though I love Louisa May Alcott, who grew up in the transcendentalist tradition... it comes through in some of her books).

I also love much of the old "kid lit" like Beatrix Potter, Peter Pan, Mary Poppins... I've been reading Gem things like The Witch of Blackbird Pond (I sure didn't remember all the anti-religious stuff in it... so when she lost interest I stopped reading it) and The Little Princess (one of my absolute favorites) and The Secret Garden.

She's more into "Goosebumps" for her own reading, but she still loves to have me read to her, so when I do it's more along the lines above, or American Girls, or "Ella Enchanted".

And yes, we LOVED Beowulf (even with the liberties they took with the story to try to combine the three battles into a coherent timeline).

I'll read anything I can get my hands on. I just picked up a load of books from the library dealing with essential oils and perfume making. Also a bunch of Organic Farming and Mother Earth News magazines.

But the classics? mmm yes. Love. Edith Wharton, Jane Austen, Beowulf in olde English as well as the Canterbury Tales in the same. I like Colonial American works and the poetry of Christina Rossetti. Oh my. I ADORE Christina Rossetti.

Queen Elizabeth I was a wonderful writer. Her words flow with a lilting tone even when they're not "happy".

The Federalist Papers are a good read if you're into Poli Sci or just want to know more about how this country was founded. I'm reading a book called "Patriots" about the founding Fathers. Excellent stuff.

I enjoy historical fiction (that Lion of Ireland sounds good, Synger!) and contemporary fiction, both historical and contemporary mystery and I have a deep and abiding love for Urban Fantasy. Especially Harry Dresden. *sigh* :)

I just finished a Clive Cussler, James Rollins, and a Star Wars novel Tiger checked out at the library. He can't read yet, but he loves anything Star Wars. I need to check into J.A.Jance. My mom has read several & recommended them to me. Mysteries and adventures lately. And of course, the classics: 3 Little Pigs and Scrawny Tawny Lion. Gotta love Little Golden Books. I'm ready for a trip to the library. I had a list of authors, if I can find it.

I'd love to. I'm fascinated by Church history. I've gotten through the intro, and am about halfway through chapter one.
