I have changed churches recently from one mega-Baptist church to a 600-800 member Baptist church over hermeneutics. I have a friend who says my hermeneutics is really too tight because I don't allow for making the Scriptures to teach about you. For instance, a guy on facebook wrote Judges 6:12, " And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, 'The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.'" He used this verse to say "God is with you and you are a mighty warrior". I jokingly wrote back that this was about Gideon and not him. But the reality is 90%+ of Baptist people would most likely do the same thing with another verse and I would have an issue with that too.

So I'm not hear to argue over this, but I certainly may argue a bit for the sake to understand why a person does this. I'm honestly clueless how someone takes Scripture to mean anything they want except for what it is intended to say.

Just to show I do believe in application: This part of Judges deals with Israelites who rejected God and God taken into captivity by the Midianites. The Israelites had no capacity to save themselves. But God called Gideon to save them. The application is we are all dead sinners, incapable of saving ourselves but God sent Jesus to save us.

You're right on target.

Too many today take a verse out of context, misapply it, turn it into a promise from God to them. When they are shown their erroneous misapplication and misinterpretation of the text the typical response is 'I just happen to believe Jesus and claim this verse'.

So much for sound doctrine and rightly handling the Word of God...

In reading the Bible there is always a distinction between interpretation (look at the context) and application. Some readers are more discerning than others.

I've heard some preachers make as much sense, ripping verses out of context.

Yep. It happens too often. Enduring sound doctrine -- 2 Timothy 4:3 -- should take place in the pulpit without concern over 'maintaining numbers'...

A deacon of mine shared with us how his last pastor refused to allow the book of Jude to be taught. It was 'too controversial'.

So much for all Scripture being profitable -- 2 Timothy 3:16.

Prayer and the Scriptures are the believer's life.

Yup...had our preacher just last week take Matthew 25-31:46 and take it to mean there are multiple pathways to God the Father since it says "all nations" and that people who dont know Christ or believe on Him can do God's Will

Try John 14.6...

PS: Great avatar photo of you guys. :)

Exactly! Thank you btw. Married life is pretty good :) (KOW!) All this interfaith ministry gets in people's heads.

John 12:44 and 17:21 really helps set things straight as well.
