• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Have you been able to talk to your psychiatrist about how difficult it is for you to come off of the lithium? Perhaps there is something s/he can give you to help you with the process to make it less intense.

Ooh yikes! Coming of Lithium can be rough. ...so I've heard. I'm still on it. 7 or 8 years now.

I came back to God about 2 years ago, and I find having Christian friends and being actively involved in my church is better than any psychologist or counselor. We all need friends, we all need a sense of "destiny" and a sense of belonging and love. I found them all in one place. Handy.

It is God who helps me through the hard times. He works through my friends, family, colleagues, and those who I help. Even a 90-year-old senile woman on my visiting round can show me what joy is about. She lights up when I place her hand on my dog's head. *connection*!!!

God is never going to give you more than you and He together can't handle - and He is the senior partner.

For me, mental anguish comes from the physical/circumstantial. Mostly it comes from people who don't care abut anyone but themselves. Solution: cut ties with them, and get better friends. I moved to a new city to make this happen, (drastic?) but a clean break was what I needed. There's more than one way to be born again.

Next time you find yourself in the "bad" headspace, stop and ask yourself what's going on right now, and what is the cause (or at least a hindrance) to your wellness. It doesn't matter if you are thinking clearly or not - it's about how you feel.
That hindrance needs to change, be eliminated, or be confronted. God's wisdom will tell you which.

Yeah, I do think the mental anguish will never really go away - just up and down like a yo-yo. But by working on those negative influences one at a time, your downs will be less down.

This goes for positives too - when you are happy/contented/warm fuzzy, identify those elements that are the cause. Nurture the good relationships, strive for excellence (cos we don't have to settle for less, just because we are bipolar) and move forward in your life with Christ, for only He can really change things deep down inside of you.

God Bless!

Hi Ariston, one of the main strategies of satan is getting the world to believe that he doesn't exist. Thats why man looks for environmental/physical causes for mental illness and NOT spiritual. One of my main problems in life is in trying to understand why many christians wont accept that their mental illness is almost always spiritual. Whats so wrong in acknowledging that its spiritual? Is it because we dont want to acknowledge we are sinners and that mental illness could be a sin issue? What are we afraid of?

My SD helped me understand why the doctors -- particularly the interns in a psych ward -- seemed so crazy and unable to comprehend the things I was saying.

He said it was because they were too specialized. A person has components of Physical, Mental, Emotional, Spiritual, Sexual, and Social. The "experts" are trained at one, or maybe two of these components and they tend to look at everything through their specialty.

For me, it was social (environmental) / spiritual, emotional, and mental. I had to completely redo the way I thought about things.

After 12 tumultuous years of severe BP, I finally found the healing -- that medicine can't provide. I worked on mental, spiritual, and emotional mostly. In early 2012 I "knew" I had come into the kingdom, but 2012 ended up with some of my wildest behavior as I went through what St. John of the Cross calls "contemplative purgation." But then in the afternoon of Oct 3, 2012, suddenly I noticed everything was quiet and peaceful, just like I "thought" things were, and with this experience I finally was "in the kingdom." So 2013 was a year of healing and readjustment, and now at age 54, this semester I started back into school for the first time in 19 years.

Now I am completely peaceful, have had no symptoms in over a year, and having a great time reengaging with life. The only reason I put "in the kingdom" in quotes, is that I'm aware not too many people say this and I understand that in so doing I'm opening myself up for challenge -- and I wanted to acknowledge that. ;)

They will tell you there is no cure. That does not mean there is no chance of healing. I wasn't supposed to get better, and prognosis did not improve until I actually did.

Medicine doesn't cure the disease, but it can help keep us from falling apart while we're seeking the healing. My doc says it's like a cast on a leg -- the cast doesn't heal the leg, but without it the leg wouldn't have a chance to heal.

Yes the mental suffering gets better, My husband had an affair about 7 months ago and I still suffer but its slowly getting better.

As for the lithium man am I mad mad mad! I told that doctor I did not want put back on lamictial because I was hooked on the stuff and it was sheer hades to come off it so what does he do? He puts me on lithium which I guess is worse. Man I am angry right now I had no idea it was addictive.

I have no advice coming off it but I do with the lamictial, just lower the dose slowly if the bone headed doctor will cooperate. You cant do that alone cause at least my lithium pills are capsules so no way to divide them.

Man these bone headed doctors, makes me so angry. He acted like I had discovered the wheel when I said I was addicted to lamictial. No way he never heard of that before. They have clinics to try to help people come off that stuff.

Are you serious? A sin issue? I have Bipolar 1 and its not a spiritual or sin issue no more than my diabetes is. Plus I thought Jesus forgives sins not punish us with illnesses. I cant say no more about this its crawled under my skin to read something like this.

Hi dark winter, well if it is spiritual, then one can be delivered from this debilitating illness. 'Hopes' asked if i was serious-i am very serious about it being spiritual. I believe a lot of mental illness is through unforgiveness, which is a sin issue.Jesus was also serious when he said that if you do not forgive, you will be handed over to the tormentors! Fear also plays a part in mental illness. I truly believe a chemical imbalance is behind mental illness. Its what causes the chemical imbalance(from a spiritual aspect) thats very interesting to study. The bible says we perish for lack of knowledge. Lets not be too quick to pronounce judgement on a topic without researching it in detail. O i forgot to add the bible also says 'fear has torment'. I will share a bit more on the spiritual side of things later. Thanks for raising that question.
